Ds's Two front teeth bashed in :( Any one got any experience of this??

Ds bumped heads with his cousin today (they're both 4)and his 2 front teeth have been pushed inwards . They are at an angle. There was blood everywhere. Lots of crying and screaming. From all of us. Not ideal I know but it was shocking to see.

We took him to A&E and they saw him pretty quickly.

After they'd checked him over incase of a head injury they told us to call an out of hours dental hotline.

We did this and they basically said to take him to our dentist tomorrow.
We have to give him neurofen and calpol every 3 hours alternatly through the night.

Dh is so upset about it. He feels like he didn't protect his son We didn't see it happen. I was in the kitchen making tea and they kids were outside with their auntie.

Ds is ok but he looks different and sounds different when he talks.

The options as far as I can see are ( not good really)

  1. teeth stay bent, but in, till they fall out naturally
  2. teeth go black, die and fall out
  3. teeth are removed by dentist
  4. teeth are straightened by dentist. I dont think this is going to happen though.

A few children I know have had their teeth knocked and they've been wobbly but stayed in and were ok. Ds's are not wobbly. Just bent.

Sorry its long.

dd had to have hers removed when she was 3 due to banging her teeth when she was 2,theyre only milk ones so she wont be gummy forever......it doesnt bother her and no children comment

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 12/08/2007 20:47

Previous thread. ComeOVeneer is on hols, so you got me and no I am not a dentist, but COV is...

ahundredtimes · 12/08/2007 20:48

DS2 did this, and sort of shoved them up into his gum. We were in France, I pulled them back out again.

Basically, they stayed in, went green, then brown, then black then fell out. Dentist's aren't keen on taking them out as a rule.

BUT big thing to watch for are the abcesses that develop on the gums as a result.

DON'T PANIC though, I'm sure all will well. He's probably more shocked than in pain. The Dentist will sort it out tomorrow.

fawkeoff · 12/08/2007 20:49

the dentist will probably just want to see him regularly for a while to make sure they dont discolour.....i cant see them doing anything drastic tomorrow

princessmel · 12/08/2007 20:49

Is she really?? I didn't know that. I'll look at that in a min. Thanks

faweoff did they go black? Why did they decide to remove them??

LadyTophamHatt · 12/08/2007 20:50

if they go black, they won't fall out.

Ds1 head butted the tiled floor at about 2years old and gradually his tooth went grey.

He eventually had it taken out a few week ago, when all the others around it had fallen out naturally, it was just this one tooth left i the middle of his top row...grey and wonky. It looked awful.
It actually got stuck because the new tooth was wedging it in rather than pushing it out because the bang had dislodged them so they didn't line up properly.

If it wwere to happen to any of theother Ds's I'd probably go down the remove them now route TBH.

princessmel · 12/08/2007 20:51

Oh my goodness. just read that they go green brown and black
And absesses too. it sounds awful

ds1 had one of his taken out aged 2 see here extraction . In our experience they don't usually extract unless it affects breathing / feeding and ds1 soon forgot all about it.hth

ahundredtimes · 12/08/2007 20:52

I agree with LTH, I wish we'd gone with the take them out route, but ds2 was only 18mnths at the time, and it seemed an awful thing to do.

He has had trouble with his teeth for ages, though, AND I think because of gum abscesses.

fawkeoff · 12/08/2007 20:53

dont fear the worst until hes been checked....dd was suffering from abcesses thats why she had to have hers removed

SpawnHorcrux · 12/08/2007 20:53

Princessmel - you have my sympathy. DS (nearly one) had a tooth-chipping incident yesterday. Not bad, but his two front top teeth are a little bit shorter and more jagged.

Went to the dentist today, and she basically explained that it would be a case of waiting to see what would happen. She said that they would only really intervene if the teeth died (in which case they would be removed). I don't know if this was because he's only v young (i.e. there might be further treatment options for a slightly older child).

Poor you and your DS. It's quite traumatic isn't it?

foxinsocks · 12/08/2007 20:54

at least it was his first teeth

he sounds very brave

ahundredtimes · 12/08/2007 20:54

Oh sorry Princess, I didn't mean to say anything deserving of four sad faces.

He's four though right? So they'll be on their way soon enough anyway, they always lose the front ones first. We probably only got to witness the full technicolour spectrum of decay because he was only 18m.

orangehead · 12/08/2007 20:54

dentists like to keep baby teeth in as long as poss as they help guide the adult teeth in2 the right place. Probably just leave and observe, teeth will likely go black if damage to nerve, sometimes this causes no probs except 2 look at. If turn turn black can lead to infection but this wont b instant maybe a yr down the line, treatment for will prob depend how long the dentist feels till the teeth fall out, may just give antibiotics to try and keep teeth there as long as poss. R the teeth upper or lowers?, lower front fall out 1st between 5 and 6 usually

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 12/08/2007 20:55

Will you read COV's input and stop panicking.

beansprout · 12/08/2007 20:56

I did this and had both taken out. Looked damn cute for years and it has never occured to me to blame my parents (I went into a wall on my trike). [toothless grin]

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 12/08/2007 20:58

Do you know what.....children bashing teeth stories is right up there with horror stories of labour..

Just another version of Baby Olympics. Well Tarquin had to have his teeth out. Out, out pah, Jerome had to wait until we could afford a head transplant.

tigerschick · 12/08/2007 20:58

Dd knocked her top, front, left tooth out when she was 10 months - she'd only had it a couple of weeks. She hit it on a chair and it was hanging on by a thread. The dentist took it out in case it fell out and she swallowed it. She went back to the dentist on Friday, six months after the accident, and we were told that it was a matter of waiting until the permanent tooth came thru and seeing if there was anything that would need doing then - not sure what exactly. She isn't at all bothered by it.
Hope it all goes well tomorrow.

tigerschick · 12/08/2007 20:59

lol LGJ - x posts

blodwen · 12/08/2007 20:59

It is probably worse for you than him. He would probably lose them in a year or two anyway, so try not to worry too much. My DS had an accident about a month ago, and knocked one front tooth out, broke another so badly it had to be removed, and had to have his lip stitched back on . He is 21, and out in Greece, so all I've seen is a photo. I was SO upset - he's never even had one filling!

zippitippitoes · 12/08/2007 21:00

dgs has a grey tooth from a bang..he did it abiout 6 months agp he is three..dentist said just leave it

sounds horrible hope he is ok tonight

(ds fell off his bike and snapped both his front teeth and had temporary caps put on which were really good, he had them knocked out again playing rugby and temps again..next time he will get something permanent but surprisingl;y they look so real that he actually forgot when it happened the second time that they weren't real.the school nurse was quite shocked at how unbothered I was until I realised she thought they were the real thing.these are second teeth)
