pain in left hand side

I have this pain that starts at the front of my left hand side and then moves to the my back. I have had it for about 2 years now and it comes and goes. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. I have spoken to my gp and she said it sounds like it could be down to the fact I suffer from constapation sometimes. I am just worried it may be something more serious

|I meant to say the left hand, sort of around where the ovaries are.

Blossom - I would keep a diary for a month and track when and for how long these pains occur - and if you can, whether or not they seem to coincide with a bout of constipation. Then if you still feel concerned, go back and be insistent.

The doc sounds a bit dismissive if you ask me - I'm sure it's nothing serious, but a few checks wouldn't go amiss.

I know I am probably over-reacting but I keep thinking what if it's colon cancer?

are you sure its not ovulation pain - i get this every month

whymummy · 22/09/2004 14:13

i have something similar,it's usually on one side then moves to the back or sometimes the pain seems to go through, mine started 7 years ago after a miscarriage,it comes and goes usually before or during a period or when i'm ovulating, does it sound similar to your pain and the timing?

blossomhill · 23/09/2004 19:28

I am on at the moment. I just thought that you had it different sides each month?

I have the ovarian pain thing - it's called mittelschmerz if you wanted to google it you might find some more info. I've only had mine since childbirth and I wondered if it was caused by the caesarean.
Sometimes it's a dull ache and sometimes it's quite sharp. It usually does alternate between sides but the timing can vary - it's not always when I'm ovulating. And it has been better since 2nd baby.
The pain in your back sounds a bit different though.
Definitely keep a diary of symptons, period dates etc so you have something to go back to doctor with. Also, what you are eating and movements!

BooMama · 23/09/2004 19:44

And sometimes one side has a MUCH milder pain than the other so you don't always notice it. At first I always thought the pain was only on my right hand side but now I can recognise twinges on my left.

whymummy · 24/09/2004 16:16

mine's always on the left side

blossomhill · 24/09/2004 17:04

When do you get yours whymummy?

OP posts:
whymummy · 24/09/2004 17:31

hi blossomhill, the pain comes just before or during a period and when i'm ovulating, sometimes is really bad and starts at the back and goes right through,is yours like that?

blossomhill · 24/09/2004 18:36

yes

OP posts:
blossomhill · 24/09/2004 18:37

whymummy - sory that sounded really rude. I should have said that yes I do get it the same as you

OP posts:
whymummy · 24/09/2004 18:43

i'm sure we both have the same thing, whatever it is don't worryit is annoying isn't it?sometimes i can't even stand up,mine can last for 2 or 3 days

whymummy · 24/09/2004 18:53

boomama,i'll have a look at mittelschmerz, thanks,it'll be good to know what this pain is

blossomhill · 24/09/2004 18:54

That's exactly how I get whymummy, literally bent over double. Sometimes the pain can be so bad I don't know what to do with myslef. I laso wonder if it's connected to the coil I have?

OP posts:
whymummy · 24/09/2004 18:58

have it checked just in case it is the coil,i've just check mittelschmerz and it sounds like that's what we have, totally harmless

blossomhill · 26/09/2004 22:20

Just looked it up. Think you're right whymummy, hopefully that's what it is!

OP posts:
whymummy · 27/09/2004 16:21

hi blossomhill, talk to your doctor just to be on the safe side in case is your coil or he might give you a strong painkiller,i might ask my doctor as it takes a long time for painkillers to work and i might need something stronger

BooMama · 27/09/2004 16:26

My pain used to be really bad - like a knife being twisted in my side, a pain that would last for hours. Touch wood recently it seems to be much more of a twinge, sometimes barely noticable.
When my doctor (a very nice lady) diagnosed it as mittelschmerz she kind of implied that it was just something you live with and we certainly didn't talk about pain relief at the time, maybe because I was still breastfeeding then.
Anyway, hopefully yours will improve with time, if that's what it is.

whymummy · 27/09/2004 16:29

thanks boomama, that's how it feels like a knife being twisted right through,it's the only time i wish i was a man

blossomhill · 27/09/2004 17:16

Do you think the pain in back is connected as well?

OP posts:
whymummy · 27/09/2004 17:24

when i get the pain it's always in my back then goes through to the front as if somebody was putting a knife through my ovary

whymummy · 27/09/2004 17:28

is the pain in your back right behind where the ovary is?

blossomhill · 28/09/2004 17:57

Exactly the same here whymummy!
