Swollen viens on lower thigh, burning pain, touch sensitive.

Evening,

I realise I'm not going to get a diagnosis here and will need to see a GP but I've had a weird day and wondered if anyone knows what this might be!

This morning as I put my work trousers on and the material brushed my outer thigh, just above my knee, I noticed it felt really bruised. Confused, I checked and there is no visible bruising. I haven't fallen or knocked it at all. I got on with my day but became more and more aware of it. I noticed that the entire area is painful to touch lightly but not painful if I touch with more pressure. As the day went on I became aware of an increasing burning pain in the area. I'm now home from work and inspected my leg more closely. There's definitely some swelling there, it's kind of lumpy and the viens seem swollen. The sensitive to touch sensation has also spread from my outer thigh above knee, around the back of my leg and to the inside thigh.

I feel totally fine otherwise, I've been extremely tired lately but I don't think it's related. My husband on the other hand is wanting me to get this checked out at A&E. 3 months ago he was found to have multiple blood clots in his lungs, thought to be due to DVT, totally out of the blue. He's normally fit and well with no risk factors. For that reason I think he's being extra cautious. I, on the other hand don't want to waste anyone's time for something that will resolve itself.

Any advice greatly appreciated 😊

Phone 111 for advice. I suspect they'll send you to A&E.

A&E now

SinkGirl · 15/08/2019 18:36

I had something similar and it was the start of cellulitis (looked like bruising and was hot and painful) but could easily be a blood clot. If you don’t feel right about going to A&E, call 111 - I suspect your answers to their questions will mean they advise A&E anyway so you may as well go now

IVEgottheDECAF · 15/08/2019 18:36

Yes i would be concerned you need to get this checked out asap

mineofuselessinformation · 15/08/2019 18:38

Sounds like cellulitis or more probably a DVT (blood clot). You do need to get this checked out today. A&E will hopefully be fairly quiet at this time of day, so go.

JudgeRindersMinder · 15/08/2019 18:38

Cellulitis or a DVT would be my concerns. I’d get checked out ASAP

ICanEatWhat · 15/08/2019 18:39

Bother, I was hoping to just have an early night lol. I do understand why I should get checked out though. Generally I'm in ok health, early 30's. Type 2 diabetic which I had reversed until my mother passed away suddenly 6 months ago and I've buried my head in the sand, piled on tons of weight which I'm slowly fixing. I guess I'm worried I'm also going to get a telling off for not controlling my blood sugar too but that's a stupid reason for not going...!

I had very similar last year. 111 advised seeing someone within 6 hours so I went to my local walk-in clinic. Turned out to be a phlebitis, which is a swelling of the superficial veins (not 'deep')... just trying to say 'Don't panic' - it could be DVT but there are other less serious possibilities too :)

Basilneedswaterandsun · 15/08/2019 18:49

Sounds like it could be superficial venous thrombosis rather than DVT. DVT would be diffuse swelling of the leg (rather than a small area) and also pain on walking / flexing the foot upwards.
Do you have varicose veins?

ICanEatWhat · 15/08/2019 18:49

Thanks, I'm hoping it is just something simple. I've just got all 3 of my children to touch that side of the thigh compared to the other and all declare it's much hotter. Suppose I better go shave my legs 😂 my husband will be home soon so we'll pop to the local A&E. We don't have any out of hours where we are unfortunately but I'm thinking they might just send me on anyway.

Yes basil, I do. I've also put on a lot of weight recently so it could very well be related

Probably nothing OP but as I ended up with a clot in my lungs like your DH last year I so wish I had seen someone about my leg pain.

They absolutely won't tell you off - it's a pretty quick blood test to check if your blood is clotting.

TinyMystery · 15/08/2019 18:51

Definitely an A&E job I’m afraid OP!

ICanEatWhat · 15/08/2019 23:07

I've just got home! A&E was very busy. No DVT thankfully. I have damaged a nerve in my back which is causing the leg pain and swelling. Absolutely no pain in my back but that's often the case apparently! Should heal itself in a few weeks. It's got progressively worse all day, the pain has now spread further up my leg. Painkillers and bed for me!

Great it's not a DVT but doesn't sound very pleasant what you've done either - I think it was def the right call. Hope you feel better soon
