ds(15) school trip with overnight ferry - what to take for potential seasickness

Ds is off on a school trip next month and they are on a ferry overnight there and back. He doesn't suffer from travel sickness normally but has never been on a long ferry trip before.

What should I send him with just in case he feels queazy and needs something?

plain crackers and full sugar cola

if he does get sea sick either lay down in berth (and stay there!) or go on deck where he can see the horizon.

Travel sickness tablets - take a little bit before getting on.

I do suffer from travel sickness and there are some really good sea sickness bands you can get but they are expensive, so not worth the expense if he's not normally travel sick.

Ginger works really well and as long as they contain real ginger things like ginger biscuits and ginger ale.

DD starts eating mini gingerbread men around 2-3 days before travelling and during (when she would have a snack) and it has helped

Its also a nice one because they are nice biscuits anyway!

I get bad travel/sea sickness, it is awful and I remember one horrific school trip to Germany . I find prevention is better than cure really.

My DD is going on a school trip on the ferry next month too, at the meeting they suggested taking tablets before they leave school. I use either Kwells or Sturgeon. I find taking half the recommended dose works just as well but without the drowsiness. If I took the amount suggested then I fall asleep!

Especially as your DS doesn't normally get sickness I would suggest just taking e.g half a Kwell rather than 1 just before they set off. Our school has said strictly no students up on deck at any point so no chance of any fresh air!

Has anyone used those wrist bracelets before - any good?

I swear by the wrist bands - I get badly travel sick in virtually all forms of transport (bar planes) and they really do work. Key is to position them correctly on the wrist before you feel sick. Much less effective if the nausea takes hold.

Used those wristbands for both of my children on the ferry last year - emergency purchase in the shop on the ferry itself after one threw up and the other looked peaky. Worked a treat on both of them and peeled up quickly. They were fine on the return trip as well as we put them on about an hour before getting on the boat. I recommend them on that basis!
