Why are my fingers falling apart?

What could be causing the skin on my fingers to blister and peel. Not painful just looks horrible. Mainly index finger and thumb. Skin so hard and thick on the end of my index finger that I don't have much feeling in it. It's happened before but I put it down to using bleach etc without gloves - started using gloved and it got better. But I'm not doing that now.

Is it just dry skin or something else?

This hapens to me and my sister, startch often causes it, have you been peeling spuds?

Well...yes actually. Weird. I'd never have though of that. 'll make DH do it from now on. Funnily enough it did start first time round after I started making bread a lot.
