So long story short, due to being scared of the dentist since being 5 i have took the step to get my teeth sorted that i am so ashamed of. I need roughly 6 molars out that have broken and 2 of them are below gum line and a couple of fillings. Im being reffered to have them out under gas and air sedation, but i am still so scared of having it done and also having the gas and air, what if i feel the pain? I cant even cope with my puppy scratching me as my pain threshold is so low! What do i do! I want to cry!

Ask if you can have intravenous sedation: I’ve had it, and it leaves you conscious enough to follow simple instructions (turn your head left, open wider, etc) but otherwise so out of it that you really won’t care about the dental work and you won’t remember it afterwards.

With such a severe phobia full sedation is more effective than just gas and air.

That was me! Then I met my OH and knew I had to do something a out it. I don't know whether it was the shame or the fear of pain that was worse. I was so scared, I almost fell apart in front of the dentist letting it all out. He was great, told me that there was no need to be ashamed and I'd done the right thing coming. I had to have teeth taken out in hospital but by then I wasnt so scared of the pain. I decided to have 4hem taken out with just local anaestetics. I was still petrified but I felt very little pain and was in and out in 20 mns!

After that, I vowed to look after my teeth and I have. I can't say I look forward to my visits to the dentist but I don't feel any fear or embarrassment despite having gone through about 5 different de tist since. That's thanks to the lovely people who have reassured me. They were all great.

You can do it and changed how you feel about the dentist.

Feeling pain should not be one of your worries. You won’t. Modern dentistry is painless. Yes, I know....people like to talk about their awful experiences, but they are actually very rare.

Having teeth out is one of the quickest, least traumatic dental procedures- and, if they are broken at the gum line, that’s even better as they come out easiest of all.

You feel pushing - that’s all. Truly. And you’ll be stunned at how quickly they pop out.

Your best bet is conscious sedation. You won’t remember one thing about it and while it’s happening, you won’t care enough to be scared.

If the needles is a big phobia, ask your doctor to prescribe some tranquillisers on the day to take the edge off the fear.

And, by the way, there’s not been one single recorded death anywhere in the world from conscious sedation. It’s that safe.

Try to look beyond the treatment itself. Imagine that feeling of having it all done and being able to smile again - and eat without pain. The relief will be amazing.
