Cleaning a Vomit Covered Mattress

Is anyone still up at this hour?

We have a foam and coir (I think??) mattress with what I thought was a removable, waterproof cover. It is removable but not waterproof. We checked on our 8 month old earlier and he was lying in a huge pool of vomit. The mattress underneath the cover stinks and is damp. I'm concerned about bacteria and SIDS. Any advice on cleaning or would you recommend a new mattress? Is anyone using a waterproof protector at the same age?

unless you are really hard up .... bin it and know for next time you need a waterproof sheet or at least put a larger pampers water proof bed protector on first

Thanks for replying. But are waterproof sheets ok for 8 month olds? Really confused about current advice. Just thumbing through the Mothercare catalogue as I type.

Happy to bin if right thing to do. Why on earth does mine have a removeable cover if not waterproof? Oh dear.

Agree with the 'bin it' advice. Had to chuck one away after teenage son came home v drunk at new year!

I was told in John Lewis that waterproof sheets ok after 6 months, but it is confusing because they always have a breathable top bit which would let vomit through.

Thank you both for replying. I've been amazed before that people are up at this time. I don't want to go to bed because I'm worried about my baby. He seems to be sleeping peacefully next to my husband at the moment. He has been sick (not baby sick) 5 times since tea time but the last 2 times were just watery. TMI. NHS Direct said to feed him a little bit but before I had chance to he wretched again. I am a real worrier - you all sound rather experienced. Any reassurance for me? Thank you again.

P.S. I feel bad but I think that I will bin it and learn from my mistake. It wasn't a cheap mattress but the Mothercare ones all say that they are waterproof.

hmmm could be a 24 hour bug - keep him off milk completely. Water, vv weak juice + weaning food that has no milk product

its very hard, 'specially at 8 months but the milk bacteria will just aggravate the issue

try and have a couple of hours sleep tomorrow late morning to catch up from tonight otherwise you will feel dreadful come Monday

He is breast fed. We've set the travel cot up in our room (his room really does STINK). He is on the bed lying on thick towels next to DH. I love him soooo much. I am useless when he is ill because I panic. Thank you for listening.

Is he teething? Dd1 used to be terribly sick before teeth came through. But it does sound like a bug - there is one going round. I agree with the water and weak juice. He will eat when he is hungry and it won't hurt him to fast for a bit.

Am only still awake cos i have dreadful hiccups!

OK, as he's BFing I would follow his lead, he will eat when he is hungry.

For next time, the hippychick bed protectors are really good, feel like heavy duty flannelette but dont let moisture through. I used one when bfing and use it with my son who still has occassional nighttime accidents.
