Constant feeling of sellotape stuck on back, but nothing there?! Anyone had this?

Hello,

My OH has been complaining that he feels as though some tape is stuck to his mid lower back all the time, the only time the sensation goes away is when he showers.
He does have some back ache this week, and it does go away when he takes painkillers.

Not much on Google about this so thought I'd ask here!

I had a similar thing with feeling like I had a piece of plastic stuck on the bottom of my foot which related to a disk problem in my lower back. I also had sensations of water running down my leg. Very weird.

Cocollepew · 09/04/2019 22:57

Sounds like it could be coming from a nerve.

Elmo311 · 09/04/2019 23:01

@MegGriffin Sounds so weird!. Did it go away on its own or with treatment?

I did have surgery due to a herniated disc and it did improve that particular symptom.

swingofthings · 10/04/2019 05:40

OMG I had that exactly, it was just a strange feeling. I had it on and on for about a year. At the time I was doing a lot of swimming and wondered if it could be linked as it seemed worse afterwards although the feeling wasnt where the strap was. I though it could be a reaction to the chlorine.

In the end, it stopped on its own. I'd forgotten about it, it's been a out 2 years now since I last had that feeling and I'm absolutely fine.

@Elmo311 omg this is driving me absolutely crazy. I’m a man in my 30’s and It started a couple of weeks ago and has been there ever since, the only time it goes away is when I’m laying on something or if I have my back up against something, otherwise when I’m just wearing a t-shirt and going about my day, I feel it constantly!
Please tell me you have an answer for this? I have no idea what it could be, but it almost feels like I’ve grown a sudden patch of back hair that’s constantly rubbing against my t-shirt. I’m having just as much trouble as you were finding anything about it on google, mostly because it’s so hard to describe but it definitely does feel like I’ve got a massive palm-sized sticker, stuck on my back 😪

NoToLandfill · 25/06/2022 04:32

Welcome to Mumsnet random plastic back man! ;)

Have you considered it might be shingles? That is a horrible nerve related thing.

Maybe try some yoga stretches to open out your hips and back, if it's nerve related maybe a nerve is being pinched

Elmo311 · 25/06/2022 07:38

@Mattakus hello! In the end it went away on its own?! I haven't had any problems with it since, I hope the same happens for you.
I did start taking Vitamin D around the same time as I'm very low in that...could be worth a try?

@NoToLandfill Jesus Christ I hope not, now that’s all I can think about 😭

Mattakus · 25/06/2022 15:13

@Elmo311 Thank you so much for replying so quickly! Funny you should mention vitamin D, I’ve been a complete recluse for the last year and haven’t even left my house due to a lengthly and severe period of depression; there is no doubt in my mind that I’m in dire need of vitamin D and I will absolutely be buying some and will definitely try to get out in the sun as well. Even if it doesn’t solve my back issue it’s definitely something I’m lacking and need to get more of. Thank you so so much for helping me realise this. I’ll report back to let you know if it improves! Thank you again!

NoToLandfill · 25/06/2022 23:01

Sorry to hear you've not been well. Are you on meds for the depression?
Not sure if you have any garden space- but when I'm feeling low it seems gardening is the only thing that helps. And in your case would also give you vitamin d.
Maybe give it a try.

TracyLovesDisney · 01/11/2023 17:39

I've been searching google for what this is..and came across this outdated thread.. But did any of you figure out what it was?? Because it's the weirdest sensation - like a square sticker is on my shoulderblade, but there is nothing there!!!

Lucy377 · 02/11/2023 00:46

Sometimes reflux/excess stomach acid can give a symptom like something nudging your upper back.
Try Gaviscon.
Notice if it's worse when tummy is empty as that might indicate reflux.

Richiell · 14/11/2023 21:15

I’ve had the same thing for the past few days and it’s a vivid feeling and of cello tape beside my T2 and T3. I’ve had constant back problems around this area so wonder if it’s something like a pinched nerve or similar. I’m going to try anti inflammatories to see what difference it makes.

Gustavson · 11/12/2023 04:50

@Richiell I've got a similar sensation on the left side of my middle back. Feel like my shirt is stuck to my back in a small area. Started a week ago and hasn't gone away. Comes on and off fairly regularly when I'm standing/walking. Did yours resolve on its own?

Gustavson · 11/12/2023 05:07

@TracyLovesDisney How about you (seeing your post was fairly recent also)? Has your sensation improved? Really hope it has bc its extremely annoying and perplexing.

TracyLovesDisney · 11/12/2023 12:40

Still there off and on - nothing visible and sooo annoying. There are no triggers or things I notice that would make this happen.

Richiell · 11/12/2023 19:13

@Gustavson Yes, mine went away after a couple of weeks! I just kept active and stretched periodically.

Gustavson · 11/12/2023 22:46

@TracyLovesDisney@Richiell Thanks so much for the quick responses guys. Much appreciated!

Richiell that gives me hope - will do my best to stay positive and hopefully this thing will dissipate into the wilderness soon.

Tracy hope it clears for you soon too. I know from past ailments that nothing is ever textbook from a recovery perspective but 9 times out of 10, they eventually go the way of the dodo. Not after a long bout of worrying and self pity though haha. Your avatar was kind of funny and timely because I think mine started from looong hours of standing in line and post a couple of long flights to Disneyland last week.

nehagupta5 · 08/03/2024 08:21

OMG. Thanks for all these posts, incredible to know that others are feeling the same thing and I'm not the only one. Thankfully this thread isn't dead considering it started in 2019. Iv too have been having this strange feeling on the left side of my middle back for some time now. It came and went and was very brief since the last few months. There was no way I could possibly describe it in words so didn't mention it to anyone nor look it up. But since the last few days it suddenly got much much worse and iv been really wondering who to talk to about it as I finally managed to articulate it , and so I searched for the scotch tape feeling on my back and landed at this thread!!! Thanks everyone, it gives me hope that it may resolve on its own. It's really a weird feeling.
