Does this sound like a problem with medised? What next?

DS2 has chicken pox. He's been fine, though.

Last night he woke at 11 or so. I gave him a maxdose of medised, to reduce itching and help him sleep. (He's had it before, but generally in tiny amounts.)

He was awake until 4am. Not hyper or anything, just awake.

I feel like hte proverbial poo on a stick this morning.

Obviously I won't give medised again - is it worth trying piriton? He is scratching some. (particularly the spots in his hair, which hadn't got immersed in the bath yesterday)

I used piriton when mine had it, it helps.
Could be medised, I don't use it as gave ds1 night terrors when I tried it but think it can mess with sleep too.
Hope you can get some rest today.

sparklygothkat · 12/07/2007 07:24

yes to the priton I was told to give it when my kids had CP.

nutcracker · 12/07/2007 07:25

Or phenergan, I gave that when Dd2 had chicken pox.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 07:37

Is phenergan available OTC?

God I feel like shit this morning, nothing like only a few hours of very interrupted sleep.

Homeopathic remedy RhusTox is really good for chicken pox. Dd2 got over CP in half the time of dd1 when she had it (didn't know about it for dd1). Can get it in most good chemists.

AugustusRookWhooosh · 12/07/2007 07:51

Definitely go with the Piriton.

RubySlippers · 12/07/2007 07:55

another tip is that you can get calamine lotion mixed with aqueous cream so it is a lot less fiddly to use
also a bath with porridge oats (put oats into a sock)
if you haven't got oats, bicarbonate of soda is fine
hope he isn't too itchy - poor wee thing

BecauseImTheFatLady · 12/07/2007 07:58

Just be aware that piriton can have weird effects as well - I had to take DS1 to the emergency doctor after he had taken it because it sent him completely dolally.

AugustusRookWhooosh · 12/07/2007 08:03

Eurax cream is great too...

ChippyMinton · 12/07/2007 08:03

My DC reacted badly to medised - they were awake but still asleep, if that makes sense, kind of like sleepwalking. As soon as the medised wore off they were fine.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 08:23

If I try another antihistamine, I'll give him a quarter dose first or something.

I don't do homeopathy, but I'm sure the information will be useful for someone else who does.

I found some aveeno baby bath stuff, this powder that comes in envelopes, it's an oatmeal thing, and he's having a bath in that now. He's clearly very itchy now, keeps rubbing, the spots are dreadful, he has a burst one on his face. His nappy area is particularly bad.

I'll maybe go get some calamine lotion or similar, and some piriton. It's worth a go. I don't think i used calomine lotion with DS1, as he just didn't seem to itch.

(DS1 has been fine on medised before, as has DS2, but I don't think I've ever given more than a half dose, I tend to do that with meds. But as he has CP and I wanted a good night's sleep ... whoops.)

Phenergan needs to be got on prescription. We have it prescribed fro DS2 for travel sickness.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 08:39

I'm not up to going to the docs, don't want to sit in a waiting room giving everyone CP. I'll get piriton instead.

Ok, we have piriton, a friend brought us some (she was buying some for her poxy child). It's working quite well, I've been giving it to him all day, and he's been much more cheerful with it.

We had three visitors, he fought with the first, played (a bit) with the second, and ignored the third. He's in bed now, anyway, dosed up on piriton.

try bicarb in the bath as well.

piriton can send kids hyper.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 18:18

He's nearly three. I'll try suggesting that. I used to scratch around mosquito bites, which works very well, but requires more precision and self-control than a two-year-old has.

He's knocked the tops off lots of spots, including at least one on his face.

He's so young, though, so I'm reasonably optimistic he won't scar.

we got phernegan over the couer but it had the opposite effect so be aware

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 18:20

Piriton's not sent him hyper - but medised woke him up (I think). Might have just been the itching, really. He wasn't that perky, he did keep trying to fall asleep.

He's been having baths with special Aveeno powder (which is for exzema and chicken pox), and Aveeno oil. The bits that are itching most are the ones in his hair (which doesn't go in the water, despite my efforts), and the ones in the small of his back (nappy rubbing?).

I've read elsewhere that Medised makes some children more awake...

NotQuiteCockney · 12/07/2007 18:49

Yeah, medised is normally somewhat sedating. I've certainly found it with my children.

I'm not 100% sure it woke up DS2, maybe it was the itching that was keeping him up, really? He was very itchy today.

dramaqueen · 12/07/2007 18:51

Phenergan is definitely available OTC. We used it with chicken pox in our house.

vonsudenfed · 12/07/2007 19:02

DD had a v similar reaction to Medised - slept for 3 hours and then was awake from 1am until 4, absolutely hyper. I googled, and it does seem to do that for a small number of kids. So, no sedation for us then, but glad the piriton is working!

And where did you get the Aveeno kids bath stuff - I can only find the bath oil?
