Hard lump on top of foot - does this sound like a ganglion?

I have had a bit of an achey foot for the last month or so, intermittently. Kind of feels like when you keep a limb in one place for a while then go to move it so it’s not mega pain.

Yesterday I found a hard little lump on the top of my foot, next to a tendon and when I press it, it almost feels like the tendon moves over it. it’s not painful to touch, it’s not a perfect little lump more a bump and I’m not sure how long it’s been there.

I’ve had ganglion on my wrist years ago but can’t remember what it felt like! I will go to the doctor about it as obviously all unknown lumps and bumps should be checked out but can’t get in at the moment.

I also have piriformis problems on that side and sometimes get sciatic pain especially when I’m running but I’ve had that for years so doubt it’s related.

Just wondered if anyone had had similar?

Is it like this? I'm a runner, this appeared after one of my runs - it just disappeared after a few months, I assumed it was a ganglion

That definitely looks like a ganglion to me! Mine is different you can’t really see it and it feels like it’s more on the bone further up - more like a bump than a rounded lump IYSWIM. But it sort of feels like it moves a little (or maybe that’s the tendon).

I was running a lot previously but haven’t for a couple of months.

Excuse my scuzzy nails and unhoovered floor!

Hahaha, it's an old photo I took when the lump appeared so could post on Facebook for comments from friends in the running club. I'm a sports massage therapist (though don't practice it) but my general advice is if it isn't causing any problems then ignore it and it'll go away 😂 it's probably a smaller ganglion or some tissue that's inflamed - try rubbing/massaging towards your ankle it'll probably go away if it's own accord

I have exactly the same OP, in the same place on the top of my foot (well both feet but more pronounced on one). I was told it’s a bone spur and that there’s no need to do anything unless it’s painful.

Aberforthsgoat · 09/03/2019 14:01

Haha @runningtogetskinny it’s only a bit achey on top of the foot towards the ankle I will try that thanks

@artesia thank you for posting! Did yours ache or anything? Mine does but it’s not constant

That was my ganglion, a new feature to go with my bunion. Both gone now Grin

My 15 year old Ds has been diagnosed with bone spurs
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/osteophyte/
They were as you describe, they aren't as painful at the moment.
We're due a follow up consultants appointment this month and they have said he could consider having them removed if they still are causing lots of pain. However they can settle down which seems to be the case.

Aberforthsgoat · 09/03/2019 14:48

@purplewithred ouch! That looks like it was really sore, glad it’s gone down now!

@justaweeone thanks that’s really helpful. It does sound very similar it’s only really started aching properly today, previously it’s been a bit achey some mornings when I’ve got out of bed and then gone back to being painless

I have another one now on my other foot but it's hidden by my tattoo - maybe tattoo over it so you forget it's there? Grin

Aberforthsgoat · 09/03/2019 15:59

@runningtogetskinny extreme... but I like your style Grin

Just been out for a short trek and wearing lace ups seems to make the ache so much worse.

You’ve actually
Planted the seed of foot tattoos now - I’ve always wanted one Grin

Hahaha when I trained for my first marathon I kept saying 'if I actually finish this I'm getting 26.2 tattooed on me as evidence I did it' so I did, it's hidden in the design. It's faded now but this was when it was done

runningtogetskinny · 09/03/2019 23:11

Won't let me post an image, sorry

goose1964 · 10/03/2019 15:14

I have a ganglion on my wrist and it feels like set jelly

Aberforthsgoat · 10/03/2019 22:42

@runningtogetskinny sounds like a cool tattoo!

@goose1984 yes when I had one on my wrist it felt like that but I wondered if they could feel harder on the foot. I thought it might be one as it’s close to a tendon but @artesia had similar and was a bone spur and seems to fit the description

I will get it checked out as it’s intermittently a bit achey up the front of my ankle

Aberforthsgoat · 10/03/2019 22:43

@justaweeone do you mind if I ask how they were diagnosed?

OP posts:
Aberforthsgoat · 10/03/2019 22:44

@artesia did you need to have an X-ray?

justaweeone · 11/03/2019 14:53

Our GP referred my son to orthopaedics at our local hospital.

Aberforthsgoat · 11/03/2019 17:54

Thank you.
I think it does sound like bone spur but I will see if i can see the doctor to get it checked out - don’t like strange lumps and bumps!

OP posts:
Aberforthsgoat · 11/04/2019 08:12

Had this checked and doctor thinks it’s a ganglion and to go back if it gets noticeably bigger. Although she said it’s only 2mm and it feels much bigger than that to me so not sure I’m very good at measuring it!
