Hi all, please can you advise? I have my smear test due tomorrow which im really keen to get done as its already over due. I have just started very very very light spotting which i get a couple of days before my period. Can I still go and have it done or will they turn me away? I dont want to speak to the receptionist as she may cancel unnecessarily. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

GO! Its fine. I was just post period and it did come back with endometrial cells present. This often happens with a period close by, if you tell them you have been spotting/due they will make a note.

When I was ttc I had to have my smear whilst on my period as only way they voukd guarantee I was not pregnant.

So I imagine it will be more than fine.

Oh thank you! I just want it done! I guess the endometrial cells were the end of the period and nothing to be concerned with? Thank you x

It's fine, they will note the date of your period as standard and can add that you are a spotting too.

Go. It’s fine. Some people get a little blood when they do the swab. I just had mine done a few weeks ago and the nurse or gp (not sure who actually does the swab!). Said it’s nornal to have a little bleeding. I saw the swab had blood and she said I would spot a day or two. I was mid cycle. So if you are already spotting it’s fine. I got the all clear, thank goodness! So no smears for a few years! Phew!

I just had it done. The nurse told me at the end if it comes back inconclusive due to the blood cells that I might have to have it done again in three months time. I am now so annoyed as if I had known this I would have waited until my period had started properly and was over. I really dont want to have to wait for a further three months to find out. Does anyone have any encouragement? Im getting myself pretty upset about this.

If it's a little blood then that won't usually affect reading/analysis of the sample. Lots of blood (e.g. if the sample pot was dark red after the brush was placed in it) might make it more difficult, as it can affect the preparation of the sample.
Hopefully your sample will be ok.

I imagine it'll be fine. They'll just be testing For HPV in the first instance so it shouldn't interfere with that. Just if the HPV is positive and they need to look at the cells.

Oysterbabe - only certain parts of England have converted to primary HPV. The countrywide roll out doesn't state until July at the earliest.
