Second tooth coming through without displacing first ones

ds has got to the ripe old age of almost 6 1/2 with all his baby teeth intact whilst most of his school friends started to lose theirs about 18 months ago. He teethed quite early as a baby (just 5 months) but they are all pretty solid still. However today I was having a prod around and noticed that his bottom front second tooth is about 1/3 of the way through but several mm behind the tiny baby ones. I assume that this should shortly displace the baby ones but as it is so far back will it create sufficent room as it just seems so big in comparison. btw ds isn't the least bit bothered by it and says he hadn't even noticed. Must be recent as he had a check up less than 2 months ago.

This is probably a daft question, but does this sound normal ?! I expect the tooth fairy will have to visit soon and I'll feel pretty silly, but thought I'd ask for reassurance from those who have been there before !

Lizs I remember a child at my school who had 2 rows of teeth, I think he had the second lot removed after a while. I would get i checked out by the dentist

If they don't start falling out you may need to take him to see a dentist. When I was a child my front teeth fell out, but my molars didn't and I had to have most of my baby molars removed by a dentist (11 in all). It didn't hurt very much though, not like adult teeth (had 4 of those out too to make room to straighten my teeth).

So long as he's not in pain I wouldn't worry too much, I don't think it can cause any long term problems.

My ds had this with the two teeth at the bottom (the only ones he's lost so far). The new ones were quite a way through behind his baby teeth before the baby teeth fell out. They've now moved forward into line with the others.

LIZS - That is exactly how Dd1's teeth have appeared.
She is 7 in november and only lost her first tooth about 2 mths ago.
Are bottom teeth wobbly at all ??
Dd1's were very very slightly wobbly and then I noticed that her new tooth was starting to come in behind.
I thought the exact same thing as you, that there was no way it would fit as it was too big and very far back.
Eventually (ages after) her bottom front tooth fell out and gradually her new one moved forward until it is now in the correct place.
The same thing happened again with the other front bottom one, and the new one was through way before the other one fell out (which it did last week). The new one has now started to move forward and doesn't look quite so large now.

My dentists said it was good that she wasn't losing her babay teeth until her new ones were almost in, a sign of healthy teeth and gums he reckoned.

this happened with both of my children and I panicked, took them to the dentist and he reassured me it was perfectly normal. It looked as though (in my dd case) her new teeth would be pointing inwards but he did say that once the old teeth were lost the new ones would work forwards - and he was right!!!

Thanks for the replies. One of the front ones is just a little loose so am hoping it will happen as StickyNote and Nutty describe. Our problem is our dentist is in UK and we are in Switzerland with only emergency cover but of course if things don't progress then we'll find him a local dentist.

Hi LIZS. Please don't worry. My DS was 7 1/2 and had 2 rows of teeth at the bottom for months. He was quite proud because only sharks have 2 rows! My dentist friends said the bottom ones always move forwards eventually but if it happens with the top ones then it could be a problem. My DS is 8 in January and so far has only lost the bottom 2. (and they have now moved forward)

I still have a baby tooth, on my top row, just behind my adult tooth. it doesn't bother me and doesn't get in the way, only when I think about it

I had double front teeth for a while. Also a baby tooth that never came out and was removed by evil butcher incompetent dentist, along with a couple of others, in later life giving me vile gaps which have impeded my supermodel career ever since.

MI, the denisit wants to remove my tooth, but I have refused as it doesn't bother me, admittly its hard to clean it, but the hyience nurse cleans my teeth as they are quite crooked and she cleans it lovely for me
