Mooncups - how many people use them and how practical are they

i have seen the term mooncup mentioned several times so i have just searched for them. Ok, are they easy to use, what about the long pipe bit at the bottom that you trim? How far up do they go?

Sorry if this seems a bit ignorant but I had never heard of them till joining mumsnet and I am seriously thinking of giving them a go.

Yes, as in you can sleep with them in.

purpleturtle · 05/07/2007 14:46

I did think the other day that if you work it might be handy to have a second to keep at work. But other than that I'm not sure there's much call for having 2.

I rinse mine most times and leave to soak for 10 minutes in a quarter milton tablet in small avent bottle full of water at the end of cycle.

Bigger ones yes or online.

£19.99 or there abouts.

casbie · 05/07/2007 15:47

love mine. bought two periods ago and still find it easier and less embarrassing than using tampons (how do you get them to the loo without showing everyone in the office, before you bleed everywhere? they never show that in the adverts do they?).

RubberDuck · 05/07/2007 15:48

I found washing mine with soap and water gave me thrush.

My solution is to have 2 mooncups. Rinse out with hot water each time (only twice a day on lighter days) and then at the end of the day switch mooncups. Wash the one that's out in hot water again, making sure all the little holes are clear then stick in a milton solution overnight dry then put away ready for the next swap-over.

Haven't had any problems since

MatNanPlus · 05/07/2007 15:48

google page

MatNanPlus · 05/07/2007 15:51

Rubberduck, beware soaking for 2 long, mine got tacky which i reversed by letting them air dry and rubbing in talc.

Milton works in 15-130 minutes.

Since limiting to 10 mins they have been fine, found a old toothbrush [manual or electric head] great for cleaning everywhere.

RubberDuck · 05/07/2007 15:52

Oh okay, will bear that in mind, thanks I mainly leave it in overnight because I'm lazy and generally do it last thing (and can't be arsed to stay up the extra 15 minutes!!!) Will switch to first thing instead and try to be more organised!

purplepoppet · 06/07/2007 08:02

Fantastic! I love mine...much better than tampons/pads and so much more environmentally friendly too!

casbie · 06/07/2007 08:11

i am really concerned that some of you ladies are using talc (carcionegenic (sp?) and soap (irratant) on something that you put up your bottom!!

the only thing to keep it sanitary is cool boiled water or salt solution (both sterilisers). there is no hygenic reason to put anything else on your mooncup, or wipe your vaginal area with!

milton (ouch), also seems like something i wouldn't like to put down there. femfresh has a lot to answer for!!

FrannyandZooey · 06/07/2007 08:24

Casbie putting a Mooncup up your bottom is not recommended

I should be selling at cost wholesale price again in a month or two

Lisalumps · 06/07/2007 12:59

I love my mooncup, I am new to using it but find it excellent much more comfy than tampons or pads.

I love mine. I don't even know why I love it so much but I do. The thing between me and my mooncup goes deep. Man.

christywhisty · 06/07/2007 15:11

I think I have had mine for 2 years now. I have never used soap on it. I boil it for 5 minutes before I need to used it, then rinse with hot water whenever i go to the loo and usually boil it again at the end of period.
It is far more comfortable than tampons, although I did have to cut the stalk very short in the end.
