My poor little boy looks absolutely terrible :-(

He's got chicken pox, the spots started coming out yesterday. I know there's a lot of it about at the moment and it's no big deal, but he has been getting steadily worse all day and now looke terrible . He has angry swollen red rings around both his eyes, his face looks appalling (angry red patches between the spots, big blisters, it looks SO sore). He is whimpering and moaning and clinging and I can't do anything for him

I've just given him Piriton, Ibuprofen and Medised and settled him on the sofa under a blanket with some soothing music on, in the hope he will sleep for a bit. But I can hear him whimpering . Any ideas for things I could do to make him feel better?

poor mini-Greeny, sounds miserable. My friend's ds just had it, badly, and had 3 nasty nights/days before feeling a lot better - one of the worst things was spots in his mouth. If your ds has any, try a lollipop (cold might help) or cold Petit Filou or something similar? Other than that, sounds as though you're doing it all already...bicarb baths, tepid, helped my friend's LO too...more than the Calamine, even.

Hope he's better soon.

flack · 02/07/2007 16:06

Piriton syrup, go to chemist now.

flack · 02/07/2007 16:07

oh, darn, just shoot me, see you had piriton already on the list. Most people haven't heard of it.

Okay then, lots of chocolate lollies?

Is it ok to give piriton amd medised together?

FlamingTomatoes · 02/07/2007 16:09

bath with oats in - hold a sock full of oats under the water as it runs,a dn leav it in the bath like a tea bag

Clamine - if you give him a paintbrush, and sit him on an old sgheet on the sofe, and let him dip and paint his own calamine onto his spots, it might really cheer him up!

other than that - it's soon over. They aren't itchy for long

geekgirl · 02/07/2007 16:10

how old is he? If over 2 I would get some Phenergan for the night (you can get it OTC). Chicken pox is just f*cking miserable when severe

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 16:11

He has been literally hanging around my neck all day, it's driving me mad! And I had just got him settled for a little nap on the sofa - thoughts of tea and 5 minutes peace - and then ds1 decided to crap himself and accidentally smear it ALL over the bathroom (including blocking the sink with it ) so have had to sort that out and shower him, while trying not to get angry because he was only trying to clear it up himself - and now ds2 is crying again

[head implodes]

They both contain anti histamines. I just thought it was one or the other.

Twiglett · 02/07/2007 16:14

ahh poor wee thing

lukewarm bath run through a sock filled with oats .. it makes the water all cloudy and is so soothing .. I did this about 3 or 4 times a day

alternatively bath with bicarb in it but I found the oats were better

hope he's on the mend better .. with CP spots come out and then on day 3 more come out

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 16:14

Oh shit What should I do? Call the GP?

paulaplumpbottom · 02/07/2007 16:14

Poor little thing, it will pass.

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 16:16

Twig, he's one big angry pustule already, I can't imagine how he will be if more spots come out

flack · 02/07/2007 16:16

Call NHS Direct to confirm the dosage is okay, Greensleeves. They are usually interested in the total over 24 hours, so a one-off mistake is probably not a danger.

MegaLegs · 02/07/2007 16:18

Don't panic - I may be wrong but it's worth checking. The dose is probably not enough to harm anyway - just make him sleepy.

When DS1 has alergic reactions I always give him piriton but they give him almost a double dose in the hospital.

bagpuss · 02/07/2007 16:19

Oh Greeny . I'll reiterate the oats and bicarb thing again. Perhaps run a bath and throw a plastic tea set in and let him play in it so that the oats/bicarb can do their work? Having just been through the same I really feel your pain.

Oh Greeny

which one of them is it? Has the other one had it already?

Call NHS about the meds

JackieNo · 02/07/2007 16:28

Sympathies, Greensleeves - DS has just come out in chicken pox spots today. I figure tomorrow he's likely to be worse. He's pretty chipper so far, thank goodness. Hope your DS improves.
