My poor little boy looks absolutely terrible :-(

He's got chicken pox, the spots started coming out yesterday. I know there's a lot of it about at the moment and it's no big deal, but he has been getting steadily worse all day and now looke terrible . He has angry swollen red rings around both his eyes, his face looks appalling (angry red patches between the spots, big blisters, it looks SO sore). He is whimpering and moaning and clinging and I can't do anything for him

I've just given him Piriton, Ibuprofen and Medised and settled him on the sofa under a blanket with some soothing music on, in the hope he will sleep for a bit. But I can hear him whimpering . Any ideas for things I could do to make him feel better?

Sorry Greeny have made you panic when you are already stressed. .

Am googling. Like flack said I think it would only be a serious prob if it had been a big dose several times over 24 hours.

DS1 had it very, very badly. Make sure you get him antibiotics the moment any of his spots look infected because they could leave scars otherwise. DS1 has got some very deep scars on his face which he'll probably never lose, because he refused to swallow his antibiotics.

bloody hell, the nurse has never heard of medised! so a doctor is going to phone me back

flack · 02/07/2007 16:42

The back of Medised bottle should give the dosage of active ingredient per 10 or 100ml, have that bottle and Piriton handy (doctor may not have either, and anyway, always possible you're using a US or European bottle so they have to check).

Wouldn't your life be boring if you didn't have all this going on, eh?

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 16:45

ok - my medised bottle says that for each 5ml there is 120 mg paracetamol and 12.5mg diphenhydramine hydrochloride

the piriton bottle says for each 5ml there is 2mg of chlorphenamine maleate.

So he has had 1mg of chlorphenamine maleate, 240mg paracetamol and 25mg diphenhydramine hydrochloride

Ant chemists want to decipher it for me?

Write it down for the doctor to judge, Greeny, what you just wrote, and how many ml he's had of each, how recently. Write it out as a dosage table:

1time, 2what, 3ml, 4total antihistamine in that many ml)

I deeply believe you've nothing to worry about, but best for a doc to decide.

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 16:51

Should I wake him up? Do kids die from parents getting the dosage wrong?

I totally wouldn't worry about those amounts. Our doctor told me that ds could have 3 x 2.5mls of piriton in 24 hours but to give him 5mls of the total at bedtime to help him sleep. It's the dosage over 24hrs that is most important.

MegaLegs · 02/07/2007 17:01

He'll just sleep - DS1 used to be given big doses of piriton when he had allergic reactions. generally though they shouldn't be given together.

Like ll says - the dosage recommended is a minimum to allow for over dosing by mistake. A one off mistake dose will not be hartmful

PHONE NHS DIRECT

they know what they are on about

LilRedWG · 02/07/2007 17:20

Poor Greeny and mini-Greeny. I hope he's better soon.

Don't stress too much about the meds, I imagine he'll sleep it off. Hope the doctor calls you back soon.

Greensleeves · 02/07/2007 17:31

have spoken to a doctor, he said there is nothing to worry about, he will just be a bit sleepier which is no bad thing

he is up and about now anyway but very miserable, he is just covered in blisters

Oh Greeny, so sorry ds2 is so ill! Poor lad! And poor you for the worry!

I'm coming into town tomorrow, is there anything I can get for you? I'm doing Sainsbury's so if you need provisions or anything dropping in, just give me a shout.

Love to all.

MegaLegs · 02/07/2007 17:43
