Post appendix nightmare - anyone got any advice

My 11yo son had his appendix out by keyhole surgery 10 days ago and life has been a nightmare since. In and out of hospital 3 times, now been in since Thursday. He has a wound infection (subcutaneous?) but ultrasound didn’t show a large mass, and his temperament keeps spiking. He’s been on two lots of iv antibiotics but tbh it’s not really making a difference. No preexisting conditions and the doctors can’t work out what’s happening with the temperature spikes. Feels like all this is far worse than the appendix symptoms. Anyone know anything about this - will it ever end? Sad

Just read and so sorry for the terrible time your son and you all are having. Hoping some improvement imminently and sending strength for you.

Fingers crossed that the chest infection is the last hurdle and he’ll be turning a corner very soon. Take care.

BigBairyHollocks · 31/01/2019 21:58

How raised is the CRP levels? We ended up going into ICU at the stage you were at which freaked me out,but really just meant they were keeping a closer eye on my DS,not that he was getting really worse. So if that happens try not to worry unduly.Glad you’re in a children’s hospital, you’re in good hands.

GinandGingerBeer · 31/01/2019 22:28

Sending you all good vibes, strength and best wishes.
HmmThanks

Mascarponeandwine · 31/01/2019 22:31

Not sure what current CRP level is, I’ve added it to my list of questions.

Not GOSH but a large children’s hospital in a famous uni city in the south.

It’s calmed down, propping him up properly, getting him to cough and breathe deeply. and a desk fan for our bay has really helped. He also has oxygen now (2 prongs up the nose thing)

Polkapjs · 01/02/2019 10:18

How are things this morning?

Mascarponeandwine · 01/02/2019 11:35

Now his shoulder has swelled up and they are looking into what to do (it must be the picc line). Another thing. He looks very slightly cooler. Looked at his phone for a bit. They have moved to oral oramorph and removed the catheter to start rehabilitating him.
They think blood was where the ng line was irritating the throat.

Mascarponeandwine · 01/02/2019 12:18

He might need yet another general anaesthetic op to sort out the shoulder swelling. That’ll be 3 ops

ichoochoochooseu · 01/02/2019 15:07

Oh that's unusual. My ds has had picc lines. He's not allergic to the dressing or anything? He once had a reaction to the tape that caused a rash and local swelling.

ichoochoochooseu · 01/02/2019 15:10

Are they thinking that a vein is blocked? I hope things start to improve op. Thanks

BigBairyHollocks · 01/02/2019 15:33

Hope you’re holding up ok OP,sounds very stressful.Whats his form like?Good that he’s on his phone a bit at least.

Mascarponeandwine · 01/02/2019 16:20

He’s looking a lot better this afternoon. Had an ultrasound to check how much of the liquid food had dispersed into his shoulder tissues but luckily we caught it quickly and the body will hopefully absorb it. The swelling has gone down a lot already. Think the end of the picc line came out of the vein somehow.

Looking at him now, maybe we can start to hope Smile

Oh my goodness, your poor DS has been so unlucky. Of all the things to happen. Glad he's looking a little brighter. Fingers crossed it's onwards and upwards from here.

BigGreenOlives · 01/02/2019 22:16

Thinking of you & your family - if only good wishes worked like magic. More sweet tea to keep your strength up Brew.
