Hey,
Looking for some advice teguarding my wisdom toothy Iv had lots of pain for the last week I can’t open my mouth more than being able to fit 2 fingers the pain goes from my jaw up to behind my eye.
I went to the dentist who took x rays and referred me to have the Wisdom tooth out which has been arranged for in 20 days. But while looking online all my symptoms come up saying infection but the dentist never gave me any antibiotics just advised paracetamol, is this right or should I go for a second opinion? I’m worried I get to my extraction appointment and they say no because of infection.
Please anyone with any advice is appreciated thank you
Hungry and in pain

I'd start by ringing the first dentist and asking if they saw any sign of infection when they did the exam.

Can you get them extracted any sooner? 20 days is a rather long wait.

FannyFifer · 23/01/2019 20:31

Having an infection doesn't stop a tooth extraction.

Impacted wisdom teeth can feel very similar to an infection. If it comes and goes then I'd say impacted rather than infected.

Unfortunately 20 days was the earliest they had but I have been put forward for any cancellations as I’m desperate for this to be done. I did think that but surely if he thought there was an infection he would of prescribed some antibiotics.

The pain is always there worse when I move my jaw I’m totally unable to move my jaw to the left and really am struggling with opening my mouth when I do open my mouth I get a really sharp stabbing pain in the curve of my jaw.
Also my throat is swollen on the side of the problem tooth.

I had terrible eye pain when my wisdom tooth would flare up now and again .Stopped once it was extracted

WrongKindOfFace · 23/01/2019 21:44

Do they smell awful? When mine were infected the gum area smelt foul. If they were just hurty they didn’t smell.

Infection doesn’t always stop extraction, but it can prevent local anaesthetic working properly, according to the hospital dentist.

Gargle with salt water 3 times a day and rub it on the gums. Ring the dentist back and be assertive about getting antibiotics. Dentists are expected now to reduce antibiotic prescriptions but they should give you some.

Infection doesn't stop a tooth being extracted but it can make local aneasthetic less effective, I would also be concerned if you have limited jaw opening how you are going to cope with an extraction.

Did they do anything at all? Did they clean out around the tooth? Try to drain anything? Or just refer you for an extraction?

Impacted wisdom teeth in itself doesn't cause problems, wisdom tooth pain is normally when there is infection around that wisdom tooth. There will be infection there but you don't always prescribe antibiotics for it.

Having said that, limited jaw opening and a swollen throat would be clear indications to me that you need some antibiotics. I would get a second opinion tbh. There needs to be some way to sort out the infection as 3 weeks is too long to wait.

You can't just be assertive about getting antibiotics, I wouldn't change whether I have antibiotics out based on how assertive someone was Hmm

Hmm

Sounds infected to me but dentist would know best. Have you had an X ray?

Mummaunicorn · 24/01/2019 12:15
