shortage of medicines- which ones?

has anyone been able to access the list of 80 medicines?

The links on the BBC website don't work- they appear to say they list is being updated.

I've spent ages googling but drawn a blank.

Ones that have been mentioned today include furosemide and naproxen. See www.theweek.co.uk/brexit/99058/pharmacists-warn-of-shortages-of-commonly-prescribed-drugs.

This problem has been growing for some time (see www.sps.nhs.uk/category/shortages-discontinuations-and-expiries/shortages/page/1/). Manufacturers stop producing common medications because the price has been driven too low, and nobody else enters the market because there is no profit to be made.

There is an interesting article in the Pharmaceutical Journal about government proposals for pharmacists to substitute medications without referring to the prescribing doctor in case of acute shortages. This is illegal under two separate Acts, as the article states, and a pharmacist who complied with the protocol would be liable to prosecution unless both of those laws are repealed and replaced, which would take several months.

Sorry, I didn't answer your question. The list is at psnc.org.uk/dispensing-supply/supply-chain/generic-shortages/. They're the drugs listed as price concessions: ones the NHS has agreed to pay more for to try to boost manufacturers' output and/or release of stocks. There aren't actually 80 different drugs on the list: tehre are multiple forms of some.

there

JinglingHellsBells · 18/01/2019 18:54

Thanks. I looked at those links first and none show the supposed 80 drugs that are in short supply.

sorry- I see what you mean. I don't think all of that list was there earlier.
