Concerned - DS sent for a CT lumber scan after an MRI - is this routine?

My DS is 15 and was referred to hospital to explore back pain after 2 or 3 episodes of back pain when playing football.

He was sent an appointment for an MRI which I felt was overkill and worried about wasting resources as the pain doesn't cause too much problem and can often come and go.

He had the MRI about a month ago, 10 days or so afterwards we received an appointment for a spinal lumbar CT scan which he had today.

We havent had any results from MRI or any conversation with a doctor or consultant about what the scans are looking for.

Would it be routine to send him for MRI then CAT scan - or has the CAT scan been ordered in response to the results of the MRI?

Hoping to get an appointment through to actually speak to someone - or a clear bill of results.

Any input would be great!

In thought they do CT first and MRI after as MRI is more detailed. That's what happened with DS2 when he was being investigated for headaches. Anyway as he had both scans done at least that's over and finished with, hopefully you'll soon have the results.
