my son's went like this last week, then he rubbed it in the shower and the head fell off, it bled for a few seconds and has now scabbed over and all but disappeared.

Ime, redness means it's about to disappear! My dr said a/b's were only necessary if the redness affected a big area and had a red line running from it. Be prepared for yucky yellow stuff to ooze out when it bursts.
