Smear results - Abnormal cells but no HPV

Hi,

I’ve just had my results letter through and it says that I have low grade dyskaryosis in my sample but no HPV infection was present.

They said the risk of cervical cancer without having HPV is rare so I’ll just be invited to have another smear in 3 years time.

I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance please?? I don’t like the idea of having cell changes, albeit only slight ones, and not having them checked again for 3 years.

TIA

This is absolutely fine, please don’t worry. In fact in Wales we are now doing primary HPV testing so with a neg HPV the smear is not read and you would’ve just had a normal 3 year recall letter.

Any abnormal symptoms in the intervening time need further review (not another smear)

It would worry me. If I remember correctly when I had my last smear I was told that my area is part of a trial where they just check for HPV and if you have HPV then they look for abnormal cells. Apparently it had been a success so far and they were going to be rolling it out throughout the whole country. It's always concerned me that they didn't check for cells, it feels like a step backwards. If you have the money I was once told that a private smear is less than £300 which may put your mind at rest. Sorry, I'm no help really.

Thank you both. I feel less worried now. I had researched cell changes etc online but it’s nice to be reassured by actual people!
