Been diagnosed with one today, explains weeks of upper gastric pain the only treatment recommended was lifelong omeprazole which I don't really fancy.

Anyone had this and found a way of managing it?

@borntobeamum hi I was diagnosed with Barrett’s and hh in December I’ve just had my biopsy results and thankfully have no displasia which is a relief, I’m only just getting my head around it but have accepted that I will be on omeprazole or similar for life though being told I have a higher chance of cancer has scared the shite out of me. I just take the omeprazole and get on with it and to be fair I know people who’ve been on PPIs for years and years with no ill effects so what else can we do?

Hi Rosie Many thanks for taking the time to reply. Your message was very helpful. Unfortunately I'm also being investigated for bowel cancer too so life is pretty tough at the moment

So sorry to hear that sending you an unmumsnet Flowers hope you get a good result, just try to remember that most people with Barrett’s don’t develop cancer it’s only a teeny tiny amount that do.

I take omeprazole daily for reflux and a HH. I’ve been told by a consultant (who I trust!) that the side effects of omeprazole are minimal, he actually said it’s one of the safest drugs available. I’m not disputing that some people get drug-induced lupus but this appears to be caused by a variety of drugs and I can’t see much evidence to show how many people have had it as a direct consequence of omeprazole? Not many as far as I can tell? Considering omeprazole is the best selling drug in the world I would think that the lilkihood of developing lupus from it is quite rare. It’s obviously an individual’s choice about taking the drug.

OP some people find that hiatus hernia’s resolve spontaneously over time so I would suggest taking the omeprazole for now (if you are okay about the risks) and seeing how it goes. You may be able to stop it after a couple of months if your symptoms settle.
