Does this sound like cancer

Hi,
I've always had dodgy guts and doctors have dismissed me with IBS.
I do have depression and severe health anxiety.
Last May, I started having gurgling stomach and burping off and on, but always went away.
Since Christmas it's everyday.
Went to doctors yesterday, said I had severe anxiety, had a feel of tummy and sent me away with sertraline.
Sertraline has already given me diarrhea and sweatiness.
I have no blood in stool, no vomiting, no pain.
But I'm so stressed I'm not eating or drinking properly.
I've got a follow up appt to see GP in a month.

I feel like I've got reflux as well but no heartburn

It really doesn’t OP. Setraline made me sweaty, gave me a dodgy stomach, reflux and heartburn. Have you spoke to the GP about your health anxiety?

Monty27 · 08/01/2019 05:50

Sounds like the meds don't suit you. Or you haven't given them a chance to work.

NecessaryOnABicycle · 08/01/2019 05:51

It sounds like hiatus hernia or similar, although I am not a doctor. I would think it's very unlikely to be cancer based on your description so (and I know this is easy to say!) I think your anxiety is really the issue you probably need to concentrate on at the moment. Perhaps mention this at your next appointment and your GP might be able to help?

Fisharesexy · 08/01/2019 05:54

No I mean the symptoms I had before I took the meds.
I've had diarrhea and sweaty after I started meds yesterday
Before that I had gurgling stomach and burping for 7/8 months.
Since Xmas everyday.
Doctor thought it was IBS.
No other symptoms.
She sent me away for a follow up in a month with sertraline. I now have these symptoms.

Have you highlighted your heath anxitey to the gp? I’m not a doctor but it really doesn’t sound like cancer.

They sound like the symptoms my father had before he was diagnosed with h pylori, which untreated can cause stomach ulcers and, in some cases, after many years, lead to stomach cancer.

Could you ask your doctor about a test for h pylori?

TBH, if they dismiss it it may be there are reasons your symptoms don't fit - given you also experience anxiety IBS is most likely, the stomach is very closely linked to the brain.

LIZS · 08/01/2019 10:27

Could be many things from hiatus hernia, reflux, gallstones, anxiety ... Cancer seems least likely outcome. Are you taking meds as prescribed, with/without/before food for example, to minimise side effects.

Fisharesexy · 08/01/2019 12:03

Only prescribed me anti depressants.
Have asked for a call back from another doctor about not taking tablets. Also, my symptoms.

I also started having palpatations in the last month controlled by Propranolol. I've heard there is a link between those and reflux.

Dr called back.
Said again, she didn't think it was cancer but anxiety. Told me to try half the tablet dose for a few days.
My bowels seem to have recovered.
Still worried I have something like cancer.
Thanks for replies

Are you having any other treatment for anxiety? Can you self refer for cbt in your area?

Fisharesexy · 08/01/2019 14:51

Yes, I've been referred for CBT. Thanks.
