Long term pain from avulsion fracture

Hi, has anyone experienced ongoing pain from an avulsion fracture of the ankle? My DC(10) had one approximately 18 months ago and has suffered on and off ever since.

They had x-rays and MRI about 6 months post injury following a particularly bad flare up. Confirmed avulsion fracture but no sign of other issues.

Pain is intermittent and can vary between once every few weeks to a few times a week. Especially after walking a lot on it.

The bone doesn't seem to be the problem it's the ligament/overall joint.

Had intensive physio for a few months after bad flare up.

But the flare ups are still bad.

I'm wondering if the bone flake is causing problems? Can it float around in the ankle space?

I'm going to make a GP appointment for them (was discharged from consultant care after physio) but just wondering if longer term pain is fairly common?
