persistant sore throat - anything else i can do?

Ive had a mildly sore throat and swollen glands for about 4 weeks now - it didnt massively bother me and I just took occasional paracetamol or nurofen to keep it at bay. however, last week, I totally lost my voice - the doctor said my throat was clear but a couple of glands were still raised. he said it was laryngitis, signed me off work (im a teacher btw)till tomorrow and said to take paracetamol for pain or fever. However, today, my voice has come back but my sore throat has got very uncomfortable and I have taken paracetamol and nurofen. is there anything else I can take and should I go back to the GP and ask for something? Am worried that i wont make it through a day at work if it carries on like this!
TIA

Go back to the doctor and whatever you do, don't try and teach with it like this. I'm a teacher and used to frequently lose my voice/get sore throats etc. I put a lot of presure on my voice and now have to teach with a microphone. Please, please get it checked out and then take a couple of days off work. MUCH better than losing it for months on end, which is what ended up happening to me.

Make sure if you try honey that its Manuka

thank you for your remedies - i will see what we have in the cupboards. i know its hanging on because i'm run down - have only been back at work post dd for a couple of months and she (and I!) have caught everything going at nursery. will go back to the docs and see what he says, he can only send me away again!
thanks again.

Sorry to hear it's still sore. Get signed off again!

Meanwhile, here's a few more "tips" I picked up:

  • don't use throat/cough sweets as they are very drying
  • drink loads of water
  • suck on mints or boiled sweets, which will encourage the production of saliva
  • don't whisper - very bad indeed!
  • drink water at room temp rather than cold and warm drinks tepid rather than v hot

Hope you feel better soon.
