Hearing question re 6-mth old

DD who is 6 months does not react at all when our smoke alarm goes off. If she's asleep it doesn't wake her and if she's awake she doesn't even blink or react at all.

She passed her newborn screening test and reacts to other noises - voices, music, sirens outside and the phone ringing.

Should I be concerned? Don't know whether I should mention this to HV or GP?

I would mention it to HV - it can't hurt and it will put your mind at rest...it may just be that its so high pitched for her at this age - 6months is still pretty young!

It's always worth mentioning, but if she reacts to other noises, I wouldn't worry too much.

Does she flinch if you shout or clap your hands from behind her? If so, she can definitely hear.

That said, if you are worried, ask your HV to check.

Thanks - yes, I think I will ask to see HV next time we're at clinic, just to be on safe side.

As Squonk said, you'd need to check if she reacts to all those noises when they come from behind her and with no other clues from others' reactions to the same noises (e.g. when there's a siren outside does she turn to it first or after she sees others turning to it?). Each noise is at a certain frequency but it would be very unusual for a hearing loss to be so frequency-specific that it only applies to smoke alarms.

ds 8 months never notices our smoke alarm it goes off at least once a day usually while he's asleep, his hearing is fine. He was in neo natal icu lots of beeps and alarms and was never bothered by them either. mention it to your hv just to put your mind at rest
