DH passed blood in urine

PictPost · 01/12/2018 20:07

DH just passed quite a lot of blood in his urine. No other symptoms just a sudden desperate urge to go. He's urinated for the second time and whilst still passing blood he also passed urine this time.

He's going to get it checked but I've read you can pass blood after vigorous exercise. He was just finishing at the gym and also hungover so definitely very dehydrated, does anyone have any good positive tales of exercise being the cause?

My DF has advanced prostate cancer so my health anxiety is raging at the moment!

Can he get it checked tonight? That must be scary for you.
Bumping for those who might be able to help.

redsummershoes · 01/12/2018 20:08

urgent gp appojntment.
he needs an urology referral

Wolfiefan · 01/12/2018 20:10

I knew someone would know better than me. Hope he’s ok.

Armchairanarchist · 01/12/2018 20:12

I get this regularly and it's always just a case of antibiotics for a UTI. (Tmi but think coca cola.) They usually refer me to urology but everything is fine. Get it checked by your GP and go from there.

PictPost · 01/12/2018 20:13

He's going Monday morning and will call sooner if passes blood again.

It is beyond scary but Dr Google tells me exercise and dehydration can be a cause so am pinning everything on that. Hoping for anecdotal reassurance to bring me down!

Armchair do you normally have other symptoms with a UTI?

billysboy · 01/12/2018 20:16

can you go to your a n e tomoz and they will take a urine sample

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 01/12/2018 20:17

Has he eaten beetroot recently?

Armchairanarchist · 01/12/2018 20:18

What I can also say is a small amount can look an awful lot. I had an AKI (used to be known as kidney failure) a couple of years ago so the first time it happened I was really worried it was my kidneys. I was given a two week wait to a nephrologist/urologist and everything was fine.

redsummershoes · 01/12/2018 20:21

my fil had this. a scope showed pylops in bladder (precursor of cancer) that needed to be removed.
no further treatment apart from pee tests every month.

Cadburyssurpriseegg · 01/12/2018 20:30

Dh had this last year.
Sudden urge to go and passed blood.
He went in the next day to GP they took a sample of his urine but gave him strong antibiotics to take till results came back. The medicine kicked in quiet quick and results came back as a uti.

He has no other Symptom.

OrcinusOrca · 01/12/2018 20:35

My very first UTI when I was about 14 was diagnosed via bloody urine. That was the first sign I had and then feeling uncomfortable. I have had many UTIs since then but no more blood that I have noticed, it made me panic a lot at the time!

Glad he's getting it checked.

PictPost · 01/12/2018 22:37

Thanks everyone, somewhat reassuring could be nothing too serious,

Will be glad when looked at. Have agreed if any more blood will do OOH tomorrow rather than GP on Monday.

No, no beetroot! I asked him the same question!

Been to the toilet again and no blood so remaining calm for now.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Could be one of several
Things. Depending on his age he may be referred for a cystoscopy to check his bladder.

Most commonly an infection but normally for visible blood in urine for men (much more common in women) they would want to check it out.

I only know this from my own bloody googling when I was referred.

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/12/2018 23:57

Quick one as I just spotted this as I was about to go to bed. My DH passed what looked like a lot of blood one afternoon, and again later. It was very scary for us both (though I hid it from DH!)

Doctor sounded very reassuring and unconcerned on phone. "Probably a UTI, don't worry." ABs prescribed - it didn't happen again and hasn't reoccurred - this was several years ago.

There's every reason to hope that it's nothing serious. But seeing blood is so scary. Hope he feels reassured after hearing these stories in here. Good luck!

wobytide · 02/12/2018 00:10

May have just ruptured a blood vessel accidentally(maybe over exerting something at gym for example). The fact it has stopped and the urine is now clear suggests the source has stopped rather than it being a constant bleed

Butterflycookie · 02/12/2018 00:17

Get him to drink lots of water to flush everything out.

dirtyfabulous · 02/12/2018 08:24

My DH had this a few months ago. Our GP was fairly certain it was trauma to the area due to exercise. Following a trip to the urologist this was confirmed as being the case.

PictPost · 02/12/2018 09:35

These stories are really reassuring thank you. Still no more blood.

Want to make sure GP still explores it properly though, I'd hate for it to be serious and we left it.

Do have it checked in any case so if it ever happened again you won't panic.

PictPost · 03/12/2018 18:01

Just a little update. Dr thinks unlikely exercise so initially taking blood and urine sample.

Wolfiefan · 03/12/2018 19:27

Hope all comes back ok OP.

Hi op, my dh is going through exactly the same thing. He went to the loo on sat morning and passed bloody urine. He went to the walk in centre where they took a sample and gave him ABs for a suspected uti. They told him to follow it up with a gp appointment this week. He managed to get a cancellation this morning where they did a urine sample and found no blood at all, not even microscopic traces. The gp told him that she'd chase up the sample from Saturday and that if it showed infection then it was obviously down to that, carry on with the ABs and there would be no further action required. However she rang this afternoon to tell dh that the sample was clear of infection so have referred him to urology on Dec 14th. He's got to have bloods done on Thursday. I'm trying hard not to worry but stupidly can't stop googling. So let's hold each other's virtual hands until our dhs both (please God!) get the all clear!

ScarlettDarling · 03/12/2018 19:36

Hadn't heard this could be down to over exertion...my dh had spent the whole week redecorating our house and was really overdoing it, could be that?
