DH passed blood in urine

PictPost · 01/12/2018 20:07

DH just passed quite a lot of blood in his urine. No other symptoms just a sudden desperate urge to go. He's urinated for the second time and whilst still passing blood he also passed urine this time.

He's going to get it checked but I've read you can pass blood after vigorous exercise. He was just finishing at the gym and also hungover so definitely very dehydrated, does anyone have any good positive tales of exercise being the cause?

My DF has advanced prostate cancer so my health anxiety is raging at the moment!

Yes DH has this, year's ago, after following the Insanity programme which is 6 days a week of HIIT. It wasn't much blood though, it was probably a microscopic amount, but even a tiny amount can make your wee the colour of blood. I don't think he had any pain though. He saw a GP who confirmed it was likely the exercise that caused it as he didn't have any more afterwards.

Lookingforadvice123 · 03/12/2018 19:42

*had this sorry not has! If he still had it I would be worried...!

PictPost · 03/12/2018 21:29

Oh Scarlett I'll gladly join you for a handhold although sorry you are here too.

If you look online you can find a few articles that support running and heavy weight sessions as a possible cause but the GP said unlikely as needs to be really strenuous and DH is pretty fit and did quite a bit weights session before it happened.

He said was pure blood the first time he went to the toilet and only passed any Jerome the second time.

He's only proving urine tomorrow and blood in Thursday so will have to wait a few days.

Are you and DH ok scarlett?

Pict My dh is fine. He's not looking forward to the investigations next week, apparently it's a tiny camera inserted into his urethra, which sounds awful. But he's not overly worried. Me on the other hand...I struggle with anxiety at the best of times so I'm catastrophising horribly here.

My dh passed bloody urine on sat morning. Then the next time he went, doing the sample at the walk in centre, there was a tiny blob of blood as he wee'd. There's been nothing since then and the dipstick test at the gp today showed not even a trace of blood. He also had a burning feeling a few times when weeing which made us hopeful it was just an infection, but clearly it wasn't.

Hope you're ok. The waiting and worrying is just awful isn't it?

BobDobbs · 03/12/2018 21:46

This happened to dp once, it turned out to be a urine infection.

PictPost · 03/12/2018 22:43

Yeah probably about the same. My DF is quite unwell with cancer at the moment so, like you, my anxiety is a bit out of proportion.

It will be fine, it will be fine, it will be fine.

Hi op How's things? Has your husband had any further investigations yet? My dh is having blood taken today and is at the urology department next fri. I'm sick of worrying about it but he seems fairly calm. Hope you're both ok?

PictPost · 06/12/2018 13:46

Hey scarlett, urine came back clear of infection and he's had bloods taken this morning.

Will get some results back tomorrow and the rest on Monday with Dr due to call him tomorrow afternoon.

I think we both feel thoroughly sick at the minute, me moreso and I'm not sleeping.

I know the rational thought is I likely to be anything serious but it would be good to get some nods in that direction!

How are you both doing? Do you know what will happen at the hospital?

People frequently have urine infections that do not show up in the lab (there's some science behind this that I can't remember!) So the tests come back as negative, triggering a referral to urology. The vast majority of referrals don't find anything sinister.

ScarlettDarling · 06/12/2018 21:47

Thanks for that Whiff ,needed a bit of reassurance today. We've just found out this evening that MIL has lung cancer, so we are extra fragile at the minute.

PictPost, not totally sure what happens at urology. Gp originally told dh that it would be a camera up his urethra but the letter which came yesterday mentioned x rays and scans with a cystoscope at a later appointment. Just wishing it wasn't happening.

WhiffofSnell · 07/12/2018 07:58

Scarlett - No wonder you're feeling fragile.

Different trusts investigate hematuria slightly differently. Mine do a cystoscopy (tiny camera to look at uretha and bladder) and an ultra sound of the kidneys. When I had my cystoscopy done, there were so many people having the procedure it was like a very efficient production line! Google is recklessly scary about medical matters but I found both consultants I saw were very blase (in a good way!) about the procedures.

Usually, no cause is found for the blood and urine and you're just sent on your merry way. Hematuria is very common - bladder and kidney cancer are rare. Fact!

WhiffofSnell · 07/12/2018 07:59

sorry that should have said no cause is found for the blood in urine

redsummershoes · 07/12/2018 08:13

Hematuria is very common - bladder and kidney cancer are rare. Fact!

true, but pre-canverous polyps are not as rare (and very treatable)

BatF1nk · 07/12/2018 14:14

Chances are he passed a kidney stone

My DH had this a few years back. Sudden urge to go, passed lots of blood. Believed to be a stone.

PictPost · 07/12/2018 18:19

Still think it's the exercise in DH case.

Bloods all come back normal too and GP pretty much said would be happy to leave it at that but will do a referral for belt and braces.

OP posts:
WhiffofSnell · 07/12/2018 18:21

How old is your DP, OP?

MrsChollySawcutt · 07/12/2018 18:26

Please follow up on the referral. It's probably nothing, but it is much better to catch things in the early stages.

DH went to the GP after passing blood in his urine with no other symptoms. Thank goodness we was given an urgent cancer referral as he did indeed have bladder cancer though luckily at an early stage. It's uncommon in younger men (DH is 48 and keeps being told he is very young to have it) but it's a persistent and fast moving disease so very important to catch it as early as possible.

PandorasBag · 07/12/2018 18:29

My husband has passed blood a few times. In his case it's something to do with having a relatively narrow urether. I think this makes irritation more likely. It's something they have monitored - but absolutely nothing malignant or life-threatening.

ScarlettDarling · 07/12/2018 18:39

Pict I'm so pleased your husband's bloods have come back all normal, that's a big positive and I hope it's reassured you a bit?

I'm really sorry to be hijacking your thread but it's just relevant to me at the minute. I've found lots of the replies on here very reassuring. How is your husband MrsCholly? Hope he's doing well?

Neolara · 07/12/2018 19:28

This has happened to my DH a couple of times. He had lots of investigations but no sinister reason was ever found. He does lots of cycling so the medics thought it was probably this.

Hope all OK for your DH OP.

PictPost · 07/12/2018 19:42

No hijack Scarlett, very much our thread sadly, hope no-one else has to join us! How are you and DH doing?

DH is fortunate to have private healthcare so will take advantage of that and try and get in to see someone before a Christmas. Know the chances are slim of it being anything serious but mad not to thoroughly investigate for peace of mind.

DH is 43, very fit and had a medical last year.

I keep forgetting that he didn't tell the GP about the overnight visit to the toilet which is why will be happy when he sees urologist.

Thanks to everyone who keeps coming on with their positive and similar stories and outcomes. It really is so useful and reassuring to hear which is why I keep checking back in.

ScarlettDarling · 09/12/2018 09:37

Thanks Pict, we're ok thanks. I think dh is more relaxed about all of this than I am. I have anxiety anyway, especially health anxiety, so always find things like this hard to cope with. Don't things always feel worse when it's Christmas as well? Hope your dh manages to get his referral asap to put your minds at rest. Dh is being seen on Friday...I'm dreading it and wishing it was here in equal parts!
