Panicking about blood test results - high white blood and platelet count

Hi all. I’ve had lots of issues with my health for the past ten months, since my son was 3 months old. I also suffer with chronic stress and anxiety (mainly around dying, being seriously ill and those around me being ill). I’ve just seen an ent for chronic sinusitis and previous ear infection. He’s sending me for an MRI of my ear (which I’m surprisingly calm about).

However, I am in a heightened state of panic as I got bloods back from my GP and he told me my WBC was elevated at 5.4 (up to 3.5 is normal and my last bloods in April was 4). He said he wasn’t worried and didn’t think it was leukemia but we should rule out any blood cancer. Due to the nature of my symptoms I thought maybe I had an autoimmune condition or something wrong with my brain/head.

I’ve booked to see a private haemotologist as I can’t bear a two week wait. I picked up my referral letter earlier. What my dr didn’t tell me was that they detected atypical cells and my platelet count was high (up to 450 is normal and mine is 503). I am absolutely distraught that this means I have something very seriously wrong like blood cancer.

Could this elevated levels be due to either infection (currently have sinusitis symptoms again) or chronic stress? Has anyone else had this before? I’m so scared of my appointment tomorrow and keep having panic attacks! Thank you for reading x

Neither is especially high. Given you have sinusitis, that is a perfectly reasonable explanation for the results.

Thank you Anna x

How did you get on at your appointment?

Thank you for asking, it was actually fine and the consultant said that he thinks I’m fine on the blood front. Mildly elevated levels and atypical cells most likely a result of virus. Physical exam was fine and no enlarged spleen or lymph nodes. Said to wait for nhs appt in two weeks as he’s not concerned and not worth spending thousands on private tests! Now feeling anxious about upcoming MRI. One thing at a time though! x
