Hi there
If you have had a Pilonidal Sinus then you know what it is, I don't really want to discribe it as its horrible.
I think i have this in its early stage as my mum had one when she was my age but would like to see if anyone has had this and what treatment they had to have.
Thanks

No but I've looked after loads!!! My first job as a staff nurse was on a general surgical ward and I became quite a pro at looking after them!!!

My mum had a very small one high up on her back, which I was able to keep clean for many years. But a few years after I moved out it became infected, probably because I was no longer cleaning it out regularly. Also the skin had healed over it, so it wasn't draining. She had it surgically removed under a local anaesthetic. I think that the surgeon was able to cut the skin in a flap, removed the encysted sinus in one piece, and fold the flap of skin back. It unfortunately left quite a substantial L-shaped scar, obvious and a little lumpy, but no bigger than a fingerprint. IRRC, it was not a difficult or painful recovery.

It does depend how big it is with the biggest ones being surgically drained and then depending on how deep it is either stiched up or packed. Can be very painful so best to get it checked out if you think you have one. Antibiotics maybe all that is needed at the moment.

I had one which resolved on its own, without surgery or anything.

Thabk goodness!

Hiya
Thaks for our replys. Mine is also in my tailbone, well thats what i think it is anyway, I am off to the doc's at 4.40 today to see. Could defo do without this as I am moving to USA in August!
But I think i have cought it early so hopefully will just need anti-biotics but then that won't get rid of the hair.
It started with pain my in tailbone which i thought was just like back ache then i mentioned it to mum and she told me about her one and now i have this thing that looks like a little hole or large (ish) blackhead if that makes sense and it hurts and is very sore. (hope not TMI!)
So going to get it checked anyway, hopefully its nothing!!

How did you get on? (used to be marmite)

Vixie78 · 24/06/2007 11:00

thankfully I only have a skin infection!! yipee!! never thought i would be so glad of that haha. He said there is a slight chance it could be pilonidal sinus but at the moment it would be too small to do anything about. So i have cream to help the infection for now.
