Weird taste like I have been smoking

I have this weird taste in my mouth like I have been smoking cigarettes but I haven't. I don't smoke. Any ideas what this could be?

I get this. I’ve got it now, also got a smell in my nostrils of burning wood (no burning wood in the vicinity). I started getting it about 4mo ago and couldn’t figure out what was causing it for the life of me. I get severe migraines with all kinds of weird sensory stuff and thought it was related to that. However, I’ve recently discovered that it’s actually linked to drinking too much (for me) strong coffee in a day.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 22/11/2018 23:18

Of course, coffee means caffeine which = migraine tomorrow, so they are linked in a roundabout way. Hmm

The smelling things that aren’t there / migraine smell hallucinations are called phantosmia.

Are you menopause age? I remember having Sunday dinner at Mils and we were sat in the lounge chatting while dinner was cooking and all of a sudden she was saying can you smell burning! Somethings in fire! And frantically started chasing round the house. There was no fire. It happened to her quite a bit after that. Then she started getting funny tastes, then she couldn't eat eggs (random) went to the doctors and turns out she was menopausal. She was 48. Now she's 56 and done with all that and she's fine. Although still can't eat eggs

Could you be pregnant? My mouth tasted awful when I was.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 22/11/2018 23:28

When I was pregnant it was the classic metallic taste, like I’d been sucking on pennies.

sheepbear · 23/11/2018 09:32

I took a test and I'm not pregnant so it can't be that. Also not of menopause age so it's unlikely to be that either.
I do get migraines but not had this before. It's strange because it's not like I can smell smoke, I just feel like I can taste it.

Well I've just done a quick Google.

When was your last dental check? Apparently, things like gum disease, holes in teeth where debris could be lodged and other things can cause funny tastes in the mouth.

BertieBotts · 23/11/2018 12:42

I would guess dental as well. Do you floss? Do you get bad breath when you wake up? My mouth taste in general is awful if I don't floss. Dentist treated me for gingivitis, which has improved it, but it hasn't totally gone away. She reckons it will in 6 months.

Ask DH if your breath smells - I can usually tell when DH has an abscess or root infection a couple of days before he notices the pain. (He had a recurring one for a while)
