yucky question about toe nails

I've just notices that behind my little toenail is a massive buildup of something hard, like a calcium deposit. it''s so thick that i can't cut the nail.
Does anyone know why this has happened and how I can get rid of it?

eurgh, can you dig it out?

Upsadaisy · 20/06/2007 22:46

lol and bleugh at digging it out. have you noticed anything else about your nails

binkleandflip · 20/06/2007 22:48

What colour is it? Is it under the nail edge or under the whole nail plate?

puffling · 20/06/2007 22:54

Binkleandflip - it's whitish and it seems to be under the whole nail.

It could be a fungal infection between the nail plate and the nail bed. Best to get it checked out anyway as these things are usually pretty easy to treat.

Thanks B and F.

yep, some fungal infections affect the nail and make it all hard, ridged, etc. Can need a six month course of tablets to clear as by then nail has completely regrown.

fireflyfairy2 · 20/06/2007 23:11

It's a fungal infection.

I have it too On 2 toes on my right foot. Looks manky when I have sandals on

I was treating it with a small jar of stuff you paint on, it smelled rank, but it was making no difference.

There is a cream they sell over the counter now that is supposed to help

pointydog · 21/06/2007 17:03

I remember when I had my toenail infection (lovely it were), it had to be oral tablets to treat it effectively. So can be worth a trip to the docs for prescription.

Tommy · 21/06/2007 17:10

you can put a drop of neat teatree oil on every day which will clear it up but you have to carry on for about 3 months

fff2

you need to go to the dr and get prescription anti fungal tablets, like antibiotics

paint and creams DO NOT work

babygrand · 21/06/2007 17:13

I took horrible tablets FOR A WHOLE YEAR to get rid of a toenail infection once! Sort it out before it gets too bad.
