Has anyone had hand foot and mouth as an adult?

Caught it from my 20 month old. He has now completely recovered but my symptoms seem so much worse! I'm barely able to walk from the blisters on my feet and I haven't eaten anything for 2 days from sores in my mouth and at the base of my tongue.

Anyone had this before? I know it's not treatable, but looking for remedies to ease the pain or encouraging stories of how you recovered from it quickly! Thanks x

DH caught it from D'S many years ago....as I recall he felt pretty rough and had a week off work
Hope you feel better soon

Yes. I caught it about 6 weeks ago. At first I didn't feel too bad. I had no prior symptoms until spots came out - slowly at first. Day 3 and 4 I was crying with the pain on my feet. It felt like a burning pins and needles sensation. I actually struggled to walk. After about day 4 or 5 the symptoms eased off but the spots took a while l9nger to go.

I was abroad and the Dr I saw prescribed Piriton for night and another non drowsy anti histamine for day. Calamime lotion was ok, helped a bit but messy on the feet and hands.

I googled alot during my painful stage and found that in kids it's mild but some adults can suffer quite severely.

I had this as an adult and know another couple of people who have too, and it's honestly one of the worst experiences of my life! The only thing that helped me was putting my feet in hot water, then wrapping them up really well and crawling rather than walking, so the blisters were not aggravated by me stepping on them. Also lots of big cups of tea so you can hold th warm mug and calm down the blisters on your hands. Hope that helps!

My older teen caught it from the youngest . It was horrible, very painful and his nails peeled off 🙁

shutlingsloe · 18/11/2018 10:44

Yes! Was 16 years ago now, dd caught it at pre-school. DS and DD were fine quite quickly, I was in agony and took ages to recover.

serenawren · 18/11/2018 11:23

Thanks everyone, it's a relief to know that I'm not the only adult suffering! It truly is horrendous! I'll definitely do all the things suggested to ease the pain. Thanks again x

Oh yes and 6 weeks later my feet are still peeling. hands went back to normal within 2 weeks but my feet look shocking. I'm glad it's November and not summer.so I can hide them away.

Kukumbr · 18/11/2018 16:24

Me! I’m just recovering now. the spots are all peeling off now. The throat/mouth pain was incredible, couldn’t eat for a few days! Hope you feel better soon.

Just tried to mix up the soup variety by trying the M&S cream of asparagus. Vile stuff. Don't know how much longer of this I can take!!

Yes. I caught it off my then 18 month old. It was bloody awful and exactly as you describe- sore feet, sore mouth. Could hardly walk. Ibuprofen and hot water bottles took the edge off.

About a week after the blisters went, lots of my skin peeled off. Painless but weird.

CherLooksYoungerThanMe · 18/11/2018 20:16

Yes, caught it from my oldest. He wasn't too bad, I was awful. Took a couple of weeks to feel normal.

Booboostwo · 18/11/2018 20:52

DH caught it from DS and had a rough time of it. His feet hurt so much he could not walk and his throat was so sore he had trouble eating. I am sorry to say it went on for a few weeks.

Viviene · 18/11/2018 21:14

I caught it twice from my niece. First time was ok but the second time was horrendous. I had some blisters on my feet and hands but mouth and throat were really bad. Every time I swallowed I had a feeling somebody was cutting my throat with razors. I survived in ice lollies and liquid, lukewarm food.

E20mom · 18/11/2018 21:21

I had it as an adult a few years ago and the tips of a couple of my fingers gave never recovered full feeling Shock

ODZFODZ · 18/11/2018 21:51

Yep. Felt like shite for six weeks. Sorry!

ChefsFloozie · 18/11/2018 21:54

Caught it off my DD. It was awful, could only manage to eat ice cream for a few days. Never regained full feeling in the tip of my right thumb!

Sweetpotatoaddict · 18/11/2018 21:57

Someone I know caught it as an adult and couldn’t understand why it called hand foot and mouth, when it should have been hand foot and fanny Shock

serenawren · 19/11/2018 03:58

Oh none of this sounds very promising at all! sweetpotato 😱😱 tbh I think I would rather it in my fanny than mouth at this moment in time, I'm starving!!
Think I have a god few more days in hell 😥 mouth still in agony

I caught it off DS, started with tiny blisters on ends of my fingers which spread to skin between fingers & palms of hands, I never had anything in my mouth or on feet but got most painful blisters on my bum which took ages to heal. The blisters on my fingertips joined together & I lost a few layers of skin as they burst & peeled. I was in so much pain I ended up at OOH who prescribed a single dose of steroids & antihistamines, these really helped & I felt better within a couple of days.
