3yo woke up unable to breath

Tonight my 3yo son woke up gagging and trying to breath as if he was choking on something, I sat up with him once he was able to breathe normally again and gave him water and his cough turned to a dry bark. He’s settled now and so I wanted to come on here to see if anyone else has experienced this? He has finished his antibiotic course for tonsillitis 2 days ago and has had it 10 times in the last 12 months, he has a consultant referral next month but I don’t know if this is to do with that or not. He’s also complaining of an earache so I’m going to get him into the GP tomorrow but I was just after some advice/reassurance as I definitely teared up a bit during the whole ordeal❤️

My dd had this and I ended up calling an ambulance the second time it happened, she was taken in and they ended up ventilating her as her throat was so swollen.

I don't want to scare you too much but keep a close eye on him and if he is struggling to breathe ring 999.

Try and prop him up a little in bed, maybe with a rolled up towel. I would go back to the docs, his tonsils sound as though they are enlarged.

Oh wow I’m sorry you had to go through that ❤️ I will definitely be keeping an eye on him tonight thank you for the advice xx

Could it be croup? My daughter had it recently. Bark like cough and struggling to breath. Took her to a and e as never experienced it before. They gave her steroids and she was fine within about 5 mins. She does get tonsillitis quite often. Not sure if it's related

It could be croup. Steam up the bathroom as much as you can and sit in there for a while with the bairn. Put a layer of cold water in the sink and bath, boil kettles and pour it in. It's boring but might save a trip to a&e.
