panorama programme and drinking too much

Did anybody see this programme. Made me really stop and think. I have been feeling like I should cut out my daily drinking habit for a while and this I think was the tipping point.

I have edged up to a bottle most nights, though some its 'only' half/3/4. It definitely is connected with the arrival of DD. Funny before I had her I thought I would drink less because I would be so tired etc. Whereas in fact it is baby in bed phew downstairs to cook and open the bottle of wine. And its the same every day so no reason not to if you see what I mean. before I had her it was if I was going out or DH and I were having a nice meal together, not a nightly reward.

Anyway I didn't have any last night and am not tonight. Anybody else fancy joining in.

I have bought a really good book with a hypnosis cd called the drink less mind and once I have put her to bed I just play that instead and it seems to break the habit.

hi there,
i used to down a whole bottle most nights pre-pregnancy, and a fair few pints when out too. sometimes my drinking was up to 70 units a week. im now on about 25 units a week, which i feel ok with, but really have to make myself stick to it, having at least 3 booze free nights etc.
i dont want to go the AA route at all, cos i love a nice wine, and im sure i have the willpower to stick to it if i constantly keep an eye on it.
theres a thread somewhere about stopping drinking, but i assume you just want to cut down?
anyway, i drunk nearly a bottle last night cos was out with dp having dinner with friends, so definately none tonight. might go to bed with some caffeine free tea, a good book, and a packet of biscuits instead!!
let me know how you get on.xx

We watched it. Frightened us. We don't drink everynight. When we do, I think we are practically "binge drinkers" =

ksmum · 20/06/2007 15:44

Well the trouble is a binge is a lot less than you think. It's if you drink 6 units or more. So that would be 2 big glasses of wine or 4 small ones. Oh dear.

No I don't want to stop completely but maybe I should stop drinking at home. Unless we have somebody round. I might try the weekend thing but think maybe that mean I end up guzzling it then.

At the moment I am just going to not drink and see how far I get.

I always have January completely off and then it gradually sneaks back up!

I've cut down massively in the last 18 mths (being pregnant helped but was doing it anyway)
We were on 3-4 cans of Stella each a night, rarely taking a night off
Now we are only ever drinking fri/sat but still more than rec in one sitting I am breastfeeding so am still drinking within limits but Dh will happily still drink 4 cans a night over fri sat and sun

If I mentally need to hold or have a drink I have tiny bit of wine in soda....

ksmum · 20/06/2007 15:58

My dh is better than I am. he nearly always has a drink unless he is working but it is usually one bottle of beer or one glass of wine. I think we are a bad combination as I would be happy not to have it every night but then I drink more in a sitting. So I am just going to ignore what he does and not have any

Is anybody else cutting down ? I quite fancy having some friends to join in. I am finding it rather liberating actually so far, though it has only been 2 days (plus this lunchtime but that was business lunch so very easy to say no to a glass).
