My dp has just heard from his estranged father of 35 years that there is a hereditary heart condition in the family, his father had stroke in his early 40's and fathers father died only 51 of heart attack..please tell me what we can do to make sure dp is ok?, his sister is over dramatising it, but we want to know the facts and what we need to do.TIA

assuming that your dp knows what the heart condition is he should probably make an appointment to discuss it with his GP who an tell him the facts and and action he may need to take.

well we dont really, he hasnt met him yet as his sister has just steam rollerd in and got in touch with him, he hasnt yet 'met' him again, just been told he had stroke at 43 and is on certain tablets now?
so would the doctor take us seriously if he said he wanted once over due to heart condition in family?

yes he should

dinny · 18/06/2007 20:27

of course the GP would take him seriously and will refer him for investigation, but is it a diagnosed condition?

PinkChick · 18/06/2007 20:28

well i would guess so his father is on permanent prescription medication(water tablets, ace inhibiters and statin tablets) and his other son gets checked regulary

well, just get your dp to book app with GP. we're about to go down similar route with Heart Hospital as it looks like my dad has hereditary heart condition. good luck.

thanks, ive just got called interfering(hes upside down at min over his selfish sister getting in touch with him) so my slamming the keyboard down should suffice as im trying to be patient with him, esp as hes today been told he could have probs with heart..so will leave it with him till mid week and tell him to make doc app..thankyou

statins indicates cholesterol, they will probably start with a simple cholesterol test, strokes can be due to a bleed in the brain or oxygen starvation due to a blocked artery. Rather look at it from a positive point of view, if he's young then he is now given a second chance to clean up his lifestyle and eat right etc. rather than a sister and estranged father trying to interfere...obviously my explanation is very general and you should go to a gp and ask to be checked.

PinkChick · 18/06/2007 20:41

thanks for that spacepuppy, i had no idea what the tablets were to reduce, but can now give him an idea, if i dont get called his sister again

ive just googled statins and it also brought up ace inhibiters, so i now know what thyre used for, but dp definatly needs to go to gp as high cholesterol isnt main cause although largly the culprit, thankyou so much

PinkChick · 19/06/2007 14:31
