Can I lay out my ignorance for all to see, and ask a question about tampons?

... It's the sort of thing I should have asked when I was 14, but here we go...

When you have period clots, and you are using tampons, where does the clot go? If you are using pads, it goes onto the pad, so what about tampons?

Um, Colditz ... you have spent far too much time thinking about this...

bewilderbeast · 18/06/2007 19:39

try tampax compak they are easier than most to put in. Am toying with the idea of a mooncup but not sure I can handle the gore and can't work out how far you'd have to shove it up there applicator tampons take the guess work out of it

colditz · 18/06/2007 19:40

No, no it camwe to me in a flash, and I sat here, clutching my sides laughing at what you could do to people you don't like.
I wouldn't do it, you understand. But you could.

there isn't a valve

that is the bit you hold on to, to pull it out

Charleesunnysunsun · 18/06/2007 19:42

Having not had a period in god knows how long im not an expert but i did and will do they return use tampons as i can't get towels to stat in the right place for love nor money even the buggers with wings move and i end p all gross!

doggiesayswoof · 18/06/2007 19:45

No no colditz, there isn't a valve in a mooncup - as Franny said, it's a cup - it doesn't open at the bottom. Stuff would fall out if it did.

As for clots and tampons, they sort of stick to the tampon and/or drop off when you take it out

It's far more gory than a mooncup tbh

hana · 18/06/2007 19:46

gawd
woujdln't touch pads with a bargepole, ewww only used them post birth
now mooncups
not sure I could do that

colditz · 18/06/2007 19:49

I really thought that thing at the bottom was a little valve, like a cathater bag.

You have all spoiled Mumsnet for me, utterly.

Colditz I just meant I never looked at your profille before and thought you were older than your mid 20's, your post have much wisdom.
TBH - I have nickers older than you!

Wotz - agree with you, I was stunned when I found out how 'young' colditz is

The trick with tampons is to make sure they are inserted correctly - it could take several attempts.

I'll have to admit to being ignorant about clots. I've only had a few afaik and that's been mostly in the last year or so.

Mercy · 18/06/2007 19:59

I mean several attempt s before you get the hang of it

pirategirl · 18/06/2007 20:01

colditz, this is so sweet, i wish i was naive, not old and bitter!!!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/06/2007 20:07

LOL at "They looked so big when I was 12, now they look so small"

Mooncups sound so exciting. I can't wait to start menstruating again so I can get one. In fact I think I'll stop breastfeeding early, just so I can have my periods back

persephonesnape · 18/06/2007 20:42

I'm just happy to find out that other people have clots! not dying! yay!

asur · 18/06/2007 20:47

LOL at valve on mooncup - you're not alone in thinking that Colditz, DH thought it was a valve and couldn't understand why I took the cup out - he thought I should just squeeze the valve every so often to empty it

And mooncup is 1000 times better than tampons

anotheranonname · 18/06/2007 21:03

I can't stand the thought of tampons since I had my dd especially those fiddly Lil-et things. I'm plucking up the courage to get a mooncup . But how much does it hold??

colditz · 18/06/2007 21:41

Oh at least a pint

OP posts:
anotheranonname · 18/06/2007 22:03

.

persephonesnape · 18/06/2007 22:05

litre~!

NormaSnorks · 18/06/2007 22:10

The anti-leak trick I found for tampons was to jiggle the string from side to side slightly before insertion so that the bottom end flares out slightly wider - provides a useful 'curtain' at the bottom

Skribble · 18/06/2007 22:16

You even get tampons with skirts now!

I have tried a few and have to say I think Tampax tampons a much better than all the others, I prefer applicator ones as I don't fancy sticking my finger up there in a public loo then having to walk out to the sinks too wash my hands (Sorry TMI I know).

You might find it easier to use the regular ones first before upgrading to super and super dooper ones which are fatter, they do expand side ways to form a tight plug though in all sizes.
Try aiming for the small of you back rather than straight upwards and one foot on the loo does make it easier (unless you fall over), just like in the little leaflet that is in the pack.

Skribble · 18/06/2007 22:18

Oh look you can even have a free sample

sherbert · 18/06/2007 22:18

I confess I have used one either

Wotz · 18/06/2007 22:19

I don't like the applicator tampons, I am all for the finger approach plus you can flare the end out for a fuller fit!
