HELP! temp 39.5 degrees for 6 month old - a problem?

Hiya,

My DS has a temperate of 39.5 degrees up his bum, has been sleeping a lot, but is quite alert and active when he's not asleep.

I've had quite a nasty cough for the past 4 days and have been pretty run down and am assuming he has caught my 'disease'. I'm managing to get fluids down him (formula mixed with water) but his temperature is still very high.

I don't want to hang around a&e unneccessarily but obviously I want to do the right thing.

Anyone out there able to reassure me?

anyone? Should I be off to A&E?

I'd book an appointment at the doctors. Its best to get it checked. Tell them on the phone how little he is.

Trouble is, - I'm in the Lake District about to set off for the looooong car journey home to London! We could try and find a local doctor, if it would be best, before we set off, - or pop into A&E on the way!?

have you given calpol and neurofen? They can be given together to get temps down quickly. Or even just calpol?

dilbertina · 18/06/2007 15:21

have you given him any calpol or anything to get it down? that and strip down to vest, and or a tepid bath should do the trick. Not sure how bum temperatures compare to ear ones tbh! Do phone NHS direct or your GP for advice, but personally I'd concentrate on getting his temp. down at home first if he seems fairly well rather than hotfooting it to a&e,

Curmudgeonlett · 18/06/2007 15:21

nurofen .. brings down a temp

calpol .. stabilises it

give them both .. intermittently

strip him off and keep a check of him

He's had medised about 20 mins ago! Can you also give neurofen with that?

He's stripped down to nappy and I've tried cooling him with a damp muslin!

I'll probably take his temp in 30 mins or so!

I'd go to a&e for peace of mind

quokka · 18/06/2007 15:27

well medised is going to make him even more drowsy so next time I would go for calpol and neurofen. Not sure about medsied and neurofen? call NHS direct and ask them unless someone here will tell you quite soon? Anyone

deestingsduznotappen · 18/06/2007 15:31

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna take him to the village pharmacy to get some calpol and neurofen and see if the pharmacist will have a quick look at him!

Cheers for all your help!
