Do I achieve anything by complaining?

Just had a first gynaecology screening today and I’m lost.

It’s NHS, I had to walk out, but didn’t listen to my intuition.

She was incompetent, rude, inconsiderate, inexperienced doctor, who thought by smiling she would cover her fear of not knowing what she was doing... I had no idea what will happen as I thought I’m just having usual ultrasound and not a gynaecological one.

Thinking of complaining but will I achieve anything?

I hope I won’t be infected by her trial check up and using me as an experience...

It's a bit unclear from your post what the situation is.
What was the reason you went to the doctor in the first place?
Is it a smear test? Or were you scheduled for an ultrasound, which you thought was abdominal - but then they did an internal ultrasound instead, is that it?

SoyDora · 21/10/2018 15:42

What actually happened? Did she do something wrong/dangerous? What is the infection risk?

Inexperiencedchick · 21/10/2018 16:44

I was referred by A&E for the abdominal pain... The doc booked yesterday for me and when I came she was unaware.

She did say that she is not competent, then offered to book it for Tuesday. When I suggested Wednesday, she said then your pain is not bad. I only needed an ultrasound checkup to see if I have inflammation in an appendicitis area... She was so rude, I actually cried a bit earlier...

I don’t know what to do.

No explanation of anything...

OP posts:
SoyDora · 21/10/2018 16:46

Why do you think you might be at risk of infection? Try to explain what actually happened.

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2018 16:47

I don’t understand either. You were scanned to check for appendicitis and don’t have it?

davisday · 21/10/2018 16:52

This is weird. If they were looking for appendicitis surely waiting until Tuesday would be ridiculous. What kind of A&E department does that?

Inexperiencedchick · 21/10/2018 17:25

I didn’t agree to have a gynaecological scan, and it’s pissing me off. This was my first experience with gynaecology.

OP posts:
davisday · 21/10/2018 17:32

So you mean vaginal?

Inexperiencedchick · 21/10/2018 17:34

Yes

OP posts:
florenceheadache · 21/10/2018 17:35

Did you go to the wrong department all together? Why would you go to gynaecology? Should you not go to Radiology?

davisday · 21/10/2018 17:35

It sure why you were in A&E with query appendicitis and ended up having gynae?

Perhaps if you go back to the start and explain everything in stages it will be clear enough for people to offer help. As it is your post makes zero sense.

davisday · 21/10/2018 17:35

*not sure?

Inexperiencedchick · 21/10/2018 17:46

I’m just feeling very low to be exposed that way...

shouldidoitspoilt · 21/10/2018 17:47

Nah it's normal to have a gynae check over as everything is so close inside you. I was sent to theatre querying appendicitis and when they got inside me I was full of blood from a ruptured ovarian cyst.
An internal scan is totally normal for the ultra sound team.
I'm sorry you were uncomfortable.
I would rather have something checked though then leave it....
The pain was murder
I was admitted to hospital though

Walkingthroughawall · 21/10/2018 17:48

You could have declined to proceed with the scan if you didn't want it. The differential diagnosis for right lower quadrant pain includes appendicitis but also ovarian/other gynae pathology.

Reading between the lines of these slightly confusing posts (and clearly i wasn't there so may have completely the wrong end of the stick) it looks like whoever saw you probably didn't think it was appendicitis (because you wouldn't normally send someone home to have a scan done days later if you genuinely were concerned that was the diagnosis) so they were organising the scan to investigate other possibilities. If you were booked in for a transvaginal scan then that operator may not be so experienced looking at the appendix as they are at looking at gynae organs hence their "incompetence" - and it's probably better that their honest about their skill set than winging it!

Inexperiencedchick · 21/10/2018 17:55

I only wanted cervical scan, not viganal.

OP posts:
florenceheadache · 21/10/2018 17:58

Your cervix is inside your vagina. And why would you want a cervical scan?

welshweasel · 21/10/2018 17:59

If you have lower abdominal pain, it is usual to request an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis. This would usually involve using a probe firstly on the outside of your abdomen and then often a vaginal probe to get a better look at the pelvic organs. They will have asked you if the internal scan was ok to perform and there will have been a chaperone present. If you didn’t want the scan you could decline.

Redrosebelle · 21/10/2018 17:59

You think you have appendicitis but the doctors wanted to exclude something gynaecological is that it?

I agree that you haven’t been very clear about what happened and what was wrong with your treatment. By the sounds of it, you felt uncomfortable with a vaginal scan - it was your first scan of this sort and you weren’t expecting it - that’s fair enough but it doesn’t sound like your consultant was medically negligent by what you have vaguely stated? So I don’t think much would happen if you complained, as they haven’t made your condition worse or caused you a loss sort of thing so you’ll probably only get a token apology.

A transvaginal scan is much clearer and easier to administer than a pelvic scan so it is MUCH more efficient. A pelvic scan needs a full bladder and they would have to try very hard to get anywhere near as decent a scan as a transvaginal scan, so it could have taken longer overall and also have been uncomfortable. However if you refused to consent to a transvaginal scan than they wouldn’t have given you one.

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2018 18:01

If you don’t want a scan you have to say no before they start. Presumably they thought it was necessary to diagnose the problem?

SoyDora · 21/10/2018 18:02

You would have to have a vagina scan to see the cervix, I believe.
Why do you think you may contract an infection?
