My son's thumb is stuck!!!

Has anyone come accross this before the doctors seem baffled. My son's right thumb is stuck in the bent position as if he's pressing a button, he can bend it inwards but cannot straighten it. I can't straighten it for him its as if its locked like that. This has only happened recently. He is in no pain and it doesn't seem to bother him at all but I am worried that if its not fixed his thumb be deformed as he grows, he is only 2. Any ideas would be brilliant as no-one seems to have a clue.

It might be 'trigger finger' thumb.

I thought that was a RSI?

trigger thumb - my ds had it at about 2 - needed a minor op to loosen the ligament. It was done as a day procedure.

It doesn't bother or hurt them while it is like that - and may occasionally straighten with a click - but will probably go back again soon after.

It usually the thumb on their dominant hand. We were lucky our gp knew what is was - it is quite rare.

correction - it was the tendon - not the ligament. It is common in older people with arthritis I think - but when it happens in children it is not related to arthritis - just something about the sheath growing a bit out of sync with the tendon and trapping it.

Ds had his operation about 9 months ago and had been fine ever since.

brilliant thank you all, I have checked it out on internet and it sounds like that is what it is. I will suggest it to my doctor and let you know what happens.
