'Mass' showing on dMass showing on MRI brain scan - please help

After fruitless visits to the GP with my daughter (age 17) about her crippling headaches, we were sent to the hospital after a regular eyesight test when an optician saw swelling behind her optic lenses (Thursday). She had an MRI scan yesterday morning which showed a 6cm mass to the front right hand of the brain. DD currently in hospital having steroid treatment to reduce some of the swelling around the mass so that they can properly assess the type of mass before discussing options. Devastated and so anxious as to what might happen next. Has anyone experienced anything similar and can help me make sense of this all? I'm really struggling and feel so alone (I have 5 other children and was widowed 2 years ago). Thank you.

@diege As a Mum if a 17yr old daughter - one of 8 children (& daughter of a woman who had a - fortunately benign - brain tumour) I just wanted to offer virtual support. I can only imagine what you’re going through and to have the op postponed mush only be making the situation more stressful on you all. Please keep the thread updated and I will be checking back in to see how you and your daughter and the family are doing. I will be thinking of you in the meantime. Sending love xxx

HollowTalk · 22/10/2018 18:53

What an incredibly stressful time it must be for you. I hope everything is alright.

MyfanwyMontez · 23/10/2018 19:24

All my thoughts to you.I was diagnosed with a low grade glioma last year. Surgery was done in February , but tumour couldn’t be removed.
It is small growing but I understand your worry . Keep checking in. I hope everyone’s alright. They know what what they’re doing. Good wishes for your daughter and you family.

diege · 24/10/2018 03:59

Thank you everyone'

Well [redacted] had surgery yesterday (Tuesday) - an operation lasting 9 hours that tested my nerves to put it mildly. The consultant says things went ok / he has to 'go in again' after the MRI scanner revealed a rim of tumour remained, hence the longer than expected time in theatre. She was very groggy when I left her but showing signs of retaining her usual dry sense of humour and glass half empty demeanour when I left her 😂.

So at least the surgery is done (for now).

Myfanwymontez, can I ask what treatment you're currently having for your glioma? I hope you're alright now x

Oh my word, I can't imagine how worried you must be feeling. At least the surgery is done now. When do you get the results?

Thinking of you all OP x

BigGreenOlives · 24/10/2018 04:34

I hope you manage to get some rest. I’ve reported your post at 03:59 & asked MNHQ to get in touch with you, your daughter’s name appears and you may wish to have it edited out. I think you can report your post too should you so desire. Sorry to fuss but at some point you may prefer her to be anonymous. Brew

Very glad to hear the surgery has been done and went well. I suspect this bit will be the hardest while you wait to hear the pathology of the tumour. Keep in touch - still thinking of you all! Xx

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 24/10/2018 07:40

diege
My tumour couldn’t be removed because it was too close to speech function. I had to to have several weeks of speech therapy afterwards, tbh my speech is not the same.
Because my tumour causes me to have seizures, I am on anti epileptic drugs and have regular MRI scans. So it’s a “watch and wait” thing.
I’m glad that you’re all alright, your daughter will have one hell a bruise if she’s like me. Just in time for Halloween- my sister said I could have a part in The Walking Dead 😁. The worst bit is waiting for biopsy results ( sorry ). Thinking of you.

rainbowstardrops · 24/10/2018 13:11

Thinking of you all and fingers crossed for positive news 🤞🏻

Flossie44 · 25/10/2018 08:32

Diege, my heart really does go out to you. From another mum who has a daughter who’s fairly poorly, the worry is immense. I can’t imagine how you’re coping, splitting yourself between your dd and your 5 other children. I really hope you have support around you.
Keeping everything crossed for you all

hennipenni · 25/10/2018 08:47

Thinking about you as you wait for the results, my daughter has an inoperable condition in her brain, but is doing well.

diege · 30/10/2018 13:37

Thanks to all. Daughter home now and recovering slowly. Results due in a week or so - will update 😊

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 30/10/2018 20:30

Thank you for updating us diege. You have been in my thoughts.
So glad you have your precious dd home. I hope she recovers well and I will keep everything crossed for positive results.

Iloveantiques · 07/11/2018 19:56

Fingers crossed it's all good news. 💐

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 07/11/2018 20:00

I had a benign tumour removed when I was 10. Lots of follow up for over a decade, but no ongoing problems at all, unless you count a fairly cool scar. Was quite tired and didn’t go in for contact sports but was back at school after I think maybe 8 or 10 days part time and full time soon after that. I really hope your DD’s recovery will be similar.

Will be thinking of you waiting for pathology results.

Cancer in my username is totally unrelated and didn’t appear for 23 years!
