he's 14 weeks. finally got the minging cold we've all had. Took him to the docs today; he's not ill enough to have to go to hospital...yet. Am keeping an eye on him of course, main worry is I can't get him to sleep and he's going to get completely knackered and therefore more ill.
He's back to the docs tomorrow morning (am in NZ) meanwhile can take him to 24 hrs place if I am worried/he gets worse
So I won't be getting any sleep again will I - it's horrid
Feel a bit of a fraud moaning on here as people have babies in hospital, but actually feel quite upset & tense about it. Hate hearing him wheezing

dd had it at that age and I listened to her breathing all one night as was so worried . She also escaped hospital (although the paed admitted afterwards it was a close call)even though she wheezed, gasped, could n't cry and sicked back her feeds. I ended up expressing and feeding her a couple of ozs at a time every hrour or two. So exhausting you ahve my sympathy and hope your little chap recovers soon.

BrothelSprouts · 12/06/2007 09:24

Poor little chap.
Best wishes and positive vibes for his speedy recovery.

AngharadGoldenhand · 12/06/2007 09:25

Ooh - horrible. Hope he gets better soon.

Dd had this when she was very small - had to sit her up all night so she could breathe. She was just this side of being ill enough to go to hospital.

Marina · 12/06/2007 09:27

You are not a fraud, bronchiolitis is very upsetting for all concerned Hope he is better really soon - a diagnosis and monitoring are very important and you have those in place now.
Lots of love XXX

InternationalMouseOfMystery · 12/06/2007 09:27

ooh poor little thing. heartbreaking when they get illso young isn't it. hope he gets better soon x

nappyaddict · 12/06/2007 09:29

at least the doctor acknowledged he did have it. ds was the same age when he had it but i had been taking him to the doctorsfrequwntly from 8 weeks with a stinking cough to be told there was nothing wrong with him, not to bother sitting down or undressing him cos i wouldnt be staying and she wouldnt be examining him. i left in tears and went straight up a&e to be told off for leaving it so long and if i'd left it another night he would have died

MrsJohnCusack · 12/06/2007 09:29

oh thanks everyone. I wish I could get him to sleep, he is SO knackered. but still smiling at me,bless him

spykid · 12/06/2007 09:30

i found letting ds sleep in his car seat helped him breath better when he was in hospital

worth a try??

ChippyMinton · 12/06/2007 09:31

nappyaddict at your treatment.
Fingers crossed for you and your little one MrsJC .

AngharadGoldenhand · 12/06/2007 09:32

That's what I did, spykid. Seemed to help.

MrsJohnCusack · 12/06/2007 09:33

oh nappyaddict

doc (not our normal one as such short notice) was very good. DD playing up like crazy as DS getting so much attention. she put a trike on him yesterday for goodness sake. and father was in intensive care last week (he is more or less ok and out of hospital now though). So was already really stressed without this...

nappyaddict · 12/06/2007 09:34

they've been great since. there is a special note on the system that i am not to see the nasty lady doctor (luckily i haven't had anyr reason to see one yet for myself but there's only 1 so could be a prob) and if he's poorly but no appointments they will squeeze him in somewhere. he's had it a few times since but hasbeen caught in time at docs and we have avoided future admissions except for 2 day cases where he needed a nebuliser.

MrsJohnCusack · 12/06/2007 09:36

and it's below freezing at night and fecking crappo NZ houses have no central heating/double glazing. blardy freezing. (and still ill myself)

moan, whinge. thank heavens for mumsnet!

OP posts:
trice · 12/06/2007 09:37

Do make sure his lips don't go blue, thats when you need the nebuliser so go straight to hospital. It might be a good idea to pack a hospital bag for you and him just in case. We ended up in hospital for a week with it. Dh had to pack and he brought all the wrong clothes including my "sexy" night clothes which are not at all the thing for the childrens ward. Ds was fine though eventually although he did have it three times. Exhausting.

MrsJohnCusack · 12/06/2007 10:04

thanks
am watching his lips like a madwoman
whilst rocking his pram madly. when Itry to feed him to sleep he BITES me (well with his gums) and it really, really hurts

oooh DH is rocking him now and his eyes have closed....

OP posts:
MrsJohnCusack · 12/06/2007 10:33

he is asleep in the pram and his breathing sounds easier although it still LOOKS rather laboured

Poor Master JC and poor you MrsJC too

Hope he is feeling better soon and you can get some sleep

Have you tried a steam infusion of olbas oil in his room to help him sleep? That sometimes worked for dd when she was tiny.

Nappyaddict, am and for you. Mums usually know better than doctors when their little ones are really ill don't they?

Elibean · 12/06/2007 12:50

Nappyaddict for you too...

MrsJC, FWIW my dd (4 weeks at the time) did end up in hospital, and HDU to boot, but the bit we had at home was just as stressful - no one else to help watch, no monitors, just you and your babe and that horrid wheezing. So definitely not a fraud.

Once home, we found putting dd in her bouncy chair inside her cot was the best sleep position for her - almost 45 degree angle, safe, etc. She was a bit collapsed into herself in the car seat (just her shape maybe??) and breathed a lot better on bouncy chair - worth a try if you have one, or a carrycot propped up on pillows works quite well too.

In case it helps to know, and no one told you: the fifth day after the first snuffles is supposedly the turning point, when they stop getting worse and start getting better. Before that, its all a bit unpredictable.

If he gets too tired, or throws up all feeds, or you get too worried, don't hesitate to go back to the docs...thats what they're there for. But I hope you continue to escape hospital, and that ds gets well soon and easily - the majority do, I'm told! xxx
