Cystitis - how long does it last?

Bellie · 11/06/2007 19:01

It started on Wed night (every 30mins up for a wee with some blood in wee) but then seemed to calm down on Thurs.
Went to see Doc on Friday - got some antibiotics and also some sachets of that vile drink stuff. Friday not too bad.
Sat ok during the day but then flared up again (up every 2 hours) at night.
Sun OK
Today fine this morning and then it seems to be coming back again this evening - not the agonising burning but certainly enough to make me wince each time I go to the toilet.

Do I need to go back to the docs tomorrow? The appointments that are available are for medical emergencies only not sure if it is a medical emergency or will it pass if I carry on drinking vile sachets and lots of water?

TIA

If you started the antibiotics on friday you should have had an improvement by now. It may be that this particular type of antibiotic doesn't suit you. Make sure you keep drinking lots as this really does help. Also i have found cranberry juice to be just as effective as the vile sachets. Cranberry juice tablets are good for prevention too.

drink plenty water and take parecetomol

Cranberry juice really does work. I had cystitus about 5 years ago for about 2 weeks. Had antibiotics which didn't really work and the doctor didn't want to give me any more. Got rid of it in the end with the sachets and also drinking LOADS of cranberry juice - about 2 of the cartons in a day from memory. Hope this helps.

maybe the antibiotics you were given are not the right ones for your kind of infection?
a good tip I was given by nhs direct was to lie in a warm bath and ehm pee in it... it's gross, but it relieves the discomfort...
cranberry juice here as well.

funnypeculiar · 11/06/2007 19:34

Not sure I've ever had it as abad as you have, but cranberry juice (drunk by the bucket-load) & lots of cymalon etc has always worked ok for me...
I'd probably leave it a day or so before going back to doctors (someone told me that some anti-biotics don't work fully until the end of the course - not sure if that's bollocks, but recently had some for chest infection & it improved a lot AFTER the anti-bs had finished) ... but I am notoriously unkeen to go to doctors.

Kewcumber · 11/06/2007 19:38

you can buy cranberry powders from good health food shops and they are clinically proven to work (as is the juice). recommendation from the Royal marsden (my mum had bladder cancer and recurring cystitis) is to take cranberry powder/juice last thing at night as they sit in your bladder longer.

Bucket loads of water and the full course of powders taken at the correct intervals should see it off in about 4 days. I don; think AB's are always helpful for cystitis as it's not always an infection causing it.

DumbledoresGirl · 11/06/2007 19:38

I have had it many times. It definitely should be improved by now. I would recommend most strongly that you go back to the doctor tomorrow to tell him/her that you are still suffering symptoms. Meanwhile, drink as much as you can and yes peeing in a bath of water helps enormously.

RnBee · 11/06/2007 19:39

go back to doc. Ask for alternative anti-b's. If I get cystitis it gets very bad very quickly and I end up hallucinating if I don't get to the doctor quick enough . But the antibiotics usually work very very quickly with me (within a day) but ALWAYS take regularly and finish the course.

definitely back that up with loads of Cranberry juice too

Bellie · 11/06/2007 19:56

Thanks everyone. Am sitting here with a pint of cranberry juice!
I finished the antibiotics this morning so do you think that the doc will give me more so soon?

Rnbee - how horrible!

yes he should but they should do a urine test and find out which AB will work (did they do this last time or just give you broad spectrum AB?)

Bellie · 11/06/2007 20:02

They did a urine test last time and gave me trimethoprim - no idea whether a general or specific.

how long a dose did they give you? Don;t think they will give youmroe of the saem but I would go back if its still as bad tomorrow.

Bellie · 11/06/2007 20:06

Three days supply, I'm starting to think that maybe it wasn't long enough....

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 11/06/2007 20:06

god three days doesn;t sound much but it may be a higher dose one.

Bellie · 11/06/2007 20:08

and the doc said to only take them if I was desparate as antibiotics are not a good thing!
Lets hope I get to see a different one tomorrow!
