Home Remedies/Tips for a blocked nose

HELP!
I've managed to keeep clear of all the cold/flu going around this year but seem to have caught it or it's due to the constant change in weather up here in good old Yorkshire the past few weeks.

I'm constantly finding myself sniffling and blowing my nose and being that annoying person 😂😂😂

Basically.. does anyone have any Home Remedies or Tips & Tricks to stop been a sniffly mess and actually be able to get a good nights sleep?
I have tried putting Vix on my feet with socks before but that was mainly for a sore throat/chesty cough which seems to work quite well..
Will this work for a cold?

Neilmed sinus rinse (you can get it from boots or even look up a nasal irrigation recipe online - boiled water, salt and bicarbonate)

Cocolepew · 25/09/2018 16:33

Vicks over your face at bedtime.

JustBeenNosey · 25/09/2018 16:35

@DragonScales Ooh thank you! Do literally just squirt it up your nose?

@Cocolepew and how do you mean? Just rub Vix all over your face? I can imagine that making your eyes water like mad!

Mentholated crystals (from pharmacy) to steam your sinuses. Go easy, it is powerful stuff.
I have also had success with first defence nasal spray. Good luck!

JustBeenNosey · 25/09/2018 16:38

@SasBel thank you! I've been told about these crystals before but I think to be honest I'd get bored and end up doing it for like 2 minutes and giving up 😂🙈

Well not like face cream (it does leave your skin smooth though) Grin
Put it over all your sinues and under your nose. It does make you eyes water so that's why you should do it at bedtime.

JustBeenNosey · 25/09/2018 18:09

@Cocolepew ooo okay! I'll give this a go tonight!
I suffer with sleeping anyway so when I have a cold it's even worse!
Anything to help get rid of this cold and get a better nights sleep will be tried! 😂😂

works quite well for me.
JuniperBeer · 25/09/2018 21:29

Hold your breath.
Honestly it works. Pinch your nostrils shut and take a deep breath and hold it. When you think you can’t hold it any more count to 3 and then breath out slowly through your nose. It’ll be unblocked. Something about your brain unblockignyour nose as it thinks you need to breathe.
There are exercises on this if you google that will give exact instructions but it’s cool proof and always works!!

JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 07:23

@WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo @JuniperBeer thank you!

Had a shit nights sleep again last night tossing and turning trying to unblock just the one side of my nose 😡😡

I'll give them exercises a go and see if it works 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I use:
the menthol crystals mentioned above
Olbas Oil
One of those sticky-up nose Vicks inhaler
Vaporub up the schnozz

A neti pot rinse- this is undoubtedly the most effective. You're supposed to do it regularly as a prevention but (obviously) I can never be arsed and only do it in times of need- then I say "I'll do this more often" (until the next time!!)

JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 07:55

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress I think I'm going to have to try these crystals..

Where do you get them and how do they work?

OP posts:
Floaty2018 · 26/09/2018 07:58

Hey OP

Mug of hot water with some chopped ginger (enough to make you burn a bit), half a lemon squeezed in, teaspoon of honey. Drink and repeat a few times a day for a few days. It will help a lot. Good luck. X

SilverHairedCat · 26/09/2018 07:59

Just go and buy Sudafed Blocked Nose spray. It's a miracle cure. Seriously.

JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 08:24

@Floaty2018 thank you! I'll give it a go!

OP posts:
JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 08:26

@SilverHairedCat I'm going to get some of them crystals from Superdrug after work so might invest in one of them as well.
I've got one of them nasal sticks but tbf they're pretty shit 😂🙈

I think I'd rather be vomiting than have a cold 😂

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 26/09/2018 08:32

The sticks are crap. The sprays are miraculous. The crystals are not as effective and you can't carry them in your pocket or use them in bed 😂

JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 09:15

@SilverHairedCat I'm at work now and got my head resting on my hand in a certain way so I don't just have one side of my nose blocked!
Everyone's coming past my desk saying 'aw are you tired?'
'No, I just want to be able to breathe!'

😂😂

Hoosey · 26/09/2018 09:24

Look up the reflexology point in your hand that clears your nose and use that. I was a complete sceptic but was travelling home on the tube with a heavy cold when an old woman next to me took my hand and squeezed this one point and my nose started to clear. It was only after she did it that she told me what she was doing. I now use it without fail when I’m bunged up.

Hoosey · 26/09/2018 09:30

Sorry, I didn’t mean reflexology it’s the acupressure point!

Dottierichardson · 26/09/2018 09:36

I have similar problems when I get a cold, the only thing that clears my sinuses when they're blocked, or 'sniffy', are steam inhalations with Vicks - the instructions are on the box. Once that's done I keep my sinuses clear by cleaning the inside of my nostrils with a damp tissue, and daily snorts of Otrivine natural (saline) spray until everything clears up: I don't use the medicated kind as they can lead to a rebound effect and actually cause sinus blockages.

JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 10:20

@Dottierichardson thank you!

I'm going to try the nasal spray and then if that doesn't work I'll try steam inhalation with Vix👍🏼👍🏼

I went to sleep last night with Vix all under my nose and around my nostrils and it still didn't make much of a difference.

I'm just a tired, snotty, angry little person today 😂😂😂

OP posts:
JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 10:21

@Hoosey oooo never heard of this. Is it like, in the palm of your hand?

OP posts:
JustBeenNosey · 26/09/2018 17:05

Thanks to everyone who said to get a nasal spray!!

Called at boots on my way home and bought a nasal spray.
Two squirts up each side and it's like I've never even had a bloody cold! 😂😂

Why didn't I think of this sooner 🤔🤔

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 26/09/2018 18:08

Yep, frickin magic cure! My mother put me onto it a few years ago when I was just vile with a bad cold. Amazing things.
