Is it possible for a 12week old to get chicken pox?

My 2 year old dd has chicken pox (first spots appeared 3 days ago), and am unsure whether my 12wk old ds could get it? He has been very grouchy over past 2 days but I'm unsure if this is early signs of CP or just coincidence.

Any thoughts?

hope your wee guy is OK

compo · 10/06/2007 19:59

yes, I'm afraid so.
I think i read that if your breast feeding that might help avoid it but not sure

it is possible for 12 wk old to get it, but could be grouchy for millions of reasons. hope it's not cp!

Hi taly, I think it is possible. However I think it would be too early for your ds to display symptoms. My ds presented 2 weeks after dd had hers. Hope for you that our ds is only teething and won't get them just yet! Good luck!

belgo · 10/06/2007 20:01

he could be getting it. It's best to try and keep them apart while his sister is still infectious, but he could have it already. It is less common at this age, and even less common if he is breastfed, but it is still possible.

If he has got it, hopefully it will be a mild version. If a baby catches it under the age of one, then it is possible that they will catch it again when they are older.

Thanks guys! Ds not BF (shame on me) so I guess he might be more prone. Now dreading the week ahead with dd (aged 2) not able to go to nursery Wed-Fri now. Any ideas on how I keep her entertained over the next few days? She has been feeling very sorry for herself today and is pretty miserable.

It's hard going with the wee one too...aaahhh! Keep telling myself noone asked me to have 2 kids under the age of 2, and grin and get on with it!!

(Sorry, I'm just feeling sorry for myself now!)

DS2 had it at 8 weeks (caught off DS1). He was really ill with it.
Keeep an eye and don't be afraid to take to GP. I kept putting off going to GP when I did DS2 was very poorly
Sorry, hope he is not too poerly>

taly · 10/06/2007 20:32

Thanks Devious! I'd taken my dd to GP when her spots first appeared and he was quite narky with me, saying it was impossible to tell with only a few spots!! Next day she was covered!
I'll keep a close eye on ds.It would be such a shame if he got it so young

my ds had cpox really young - was fine as he could bf through it plus couldn't really scratch. I was just pleased afterwards that he'd had it. My dd had it at 4 and this was awful!

Hope your little one is ok

Trinityrhino · 10/06/2007 20:36

my 2 year lod got cp and the exactly 2 weeks later my 7 week old got it. she was covered in spots but not overly ill.
I'm afraid it is possible but he may not, hope he doesn't

compo · 10/06/2007 20:38

I really feel for you. Having a 12 week old is knackering at the nest of times, without your eldest being ill.
Do you have lots of help? Can other half take some time off work?

taly · 10/06/2007 20:41

Hi compo! No dh can't take time off unfortunately. Most of my friends are working, and the others that are still off on maternity Leave are out of bounds as dd is still infectious! Looks like CBeebies might be the answer...until she gets bored after 20 mins!

i posted almost the exact same thing a few days ago, except my baby is 13 weeks old.

it turned out my dd2 didnt have CP in the end,but i spoke to a few people who said thier babies had got it but only very mildly.
