son can't hear after earache..

ds age 7 had earache last week. It is now better, but he is so deaf! I gave him calpol when hurting.
He is shouting, and just can't hear me! How long should it take for it to return? thanks

My son's went for 2 months, and only came back after a course of strong antibiotics. There was gunk in his ears.
