HUGE menstrual clots - is this normal?

Probably tmi but my period started on Monday and it hasn?t been too bad really (normally agonising!). Last night a felt a bit ?weird?, almost sicky but couldn?t put my finger on it. I woke up at 1ish with really bad tummy pains (not the localised pains GP thinks might be PCOS ? waiting for scan) and thought it felt like trapped wind, which I normally get on my period. Anyway, nothing would shift it and I hardly got any sleep. Woke up this morning feeling dreadful ? really sore tummy and feeling quite sick. Came to work anyway as so much to do, and at about 9.30ish I went to the loo and passed three of the biggest clots I?ve ever seen ? one was about 3? long and 1? thick, the other two not much smaller. I normally have clotty periods, and they?ve definitely got bigger since dd (2yo) but these were really big.

Is this normal? I do feel a bit better now I?ve passed them. Is it normal to have pain with clots? Defo not mc by the way, I know it?s my period.

yeah, it's normal to have pain with clots. They can really hurt when they come out - I once passed out from the pain and threw up in agony when I came to.

Mention it to the GP though and the person doing the scan.

I've had scans and all sorts and I just have heavy periods.

Thanks fox, it's a nightmare isn't it? GP thinks I've got PCOS as I have other hormonal probs but my blood tests came back normal. Not looking forward to scan.

Is it an internal one?

It's not painful, I promise.

Songbird · 07/06/2007 11:06

Stupidly, I don't actually know! I had never heard of internal scans for PCOS when I saw the GP so didn't know to ask IYSWIM.

Yes. I used to pass really large clots, like bits of liver - bleeeeeeee. The associated pain was excruciating.

My periods got better after being on the pill for a few years.

Mmn, years ago when I first saw GP about my periods she tried me on the pill, I tried several types but none of them suited me at all. My hormones are really messed up and were defo worse on the pill.

I used to have large clots as well, they happened a little while after I had removed a tampax, it was extremely painful. For the past 2 years I have stopped using tampax and not had them since.
