Xenical/Reductil - any experience?

My GP has suggested one of the above to combat my overeating.

I've googled it and read up on the side effects and some of them sound embarrasing and unpleasant

Anyone got any experience of taking weight loss medication?

I took Xenical for a couple of months - went to a private slimming clinic. I did suffer from the unpleasant (embarrassing, smelly) side-effects, but that was because I was not committed to making the necessary changes in my diet. If your GP is going to prescribe Xenical or Reductil then I suppose he/she will be monitoring your progress. I've no experience of Reductil, but I did try slimming pills. They made me very jumpy and my heart beat very fast, so I stopped taking them.

One of my friends took Reductil and said they made her very depressed (verging on suicidal). She only took them for a month and with a week of coming off them her depression lifted.

She told me she would rather be fat than feel like that again.

Hi TFFCF, I've tried both of these.

With the Xenical I adjusted my diet making sure that it was low fat but still had absolutely gross side effects (very oily, smelly stools and some "seepage" over which I had no control ) - highly unpleasant. They may work differently for diferent people but I definitely wouldn't recommend them.

The Reductil made me feel very peculiar, completely "out of it" to the point where I didn't feel happy driving when I had taken a tablet. Also they didn't have much of an effect on controlling my eating (mostly, I think, because I tend to eat in response to stress not hunger) so I didn't have much joy with these either.

Sorry to be a wet blanket. This may just be my experience - you do hear of people doing really well on them. Good luck with whatever you decide to try.

I don't think you need diet pills and I have just been reading the side effects of those drugs and they scare me.

I know you want to lose weight but I think you will naturally lose it once you are happier in your life. i.e. Once your hours are reduced at work and/or you DH changes his job/your location or whatever you guys decide...I bet your weight falls off.

As you already eat a healthy low fat diet anyway with some treats of chocolate and beer, isn't this more likely to be a reaction to the AD's rather than food ? Could be completely wrong about that though.
