NHS Orthodontics - aftercare costs

Ds (20) had NHS orthodontic treatment at hospital and finally had braces removed earlier this year. He now has an overnight mould retainer and fixed wires behind top and bottom. However as he is due to be discharged at the end of the year he has been told he will have to fund any maintenance required. Denplan apparently won't cover this and our practice has an in-house orthodontist now. Can anyone give any idea of cost if, for example , a bracket dislodges or wire breaks.

following, as I'll need to know too, as DD2 is getting her braces off soon after fiver very long years.

Depends on the practice. Ours charges 50 per retainer. Fixed retainers cost around 150 for replacement. But those are for returning patients.

Wow that sounds pricey, especially on a student budget!

I’m not a medical professional - but would a HC2/HC3 Certificate for Help with Health Costs reduce the cost of these services? If not, if he’s a low income student it might be worth filling out the HC1 application form regardless

NHS orthodontist charges £75 per replacement mould. So £150 if you needed top and bottom.
