Odd lump in back of neck

DrawingPlans · 30/08/2018 22:11

I have a lump that I have just discovered. It's on the side of the back of my neck by the hairline. Its about equal distance between the middle of the back of my neck and my ear iyswim.

I don't know how long I have had it for as it doesn't hurt and I only found it when I was putting sun block on while I was on holiday.

I don't think it's an ingrowing hair or a spot as the skin just moves over the lump and the lump stays still.

Has anyone had anything like this? TIA

I have exactly this in the same spot. It’s been there for years, sometimes it’s bigger and other times you can’t feel it at all. It’s very hard. Following this with interest Grin

I had this before with no pain or anything turned out it was just a gland but always best to have it checked by a professional

BusterGonad · 31/08/2018 10:48

Bloody hell, I've got this too and I asked my husband what it was, he said a spit with a black head and told me to squeeze it, which I did, now its sore and bigger but nothing came out!

Booboopidoo · 31/08/2018 10:57

I’ve had this for years, had it checked by GP once who said she couldn’t feel anything! I can feel it and so can DH but assume it must have felt ‘normal’ to GP so maybe just one of those areas which feel a bit lumpy? Get it checked anyway OP, can’t hurt.

I had this and it turned out to be a cyst. Scary stuff went through my head as it started getting bigger (it had been pea sized for a while so thought it was a spot without a head ) but a course of antibiotics sorted it.

Always get lumps and bumps checked by a health professional but it is most likely to be a sebacious cyst x

DrawingPlans · 31/08/2018 12:18

Ooh, replies. Thank you

Its definitely not a spot. I can move the skin and the lump stays in the same place. Hopefully its just a cyst

I do have a GP appt booked for the end of the month, but knowing how awesome our receptionists at the surgery are, I have just phoned them up for their advice. They said they would not be happy for me to wait to the end of the month to get it checked as they like all lumps and bumps checked quickly so have told me to make an emergency appt on Monday. I said I was reluctant to waste an emergency appt for what could just be a cyst, but she said that they would rather see a thousand cysts than miss something more serious.

Now fingers crossed I don't get the Doctor I don't get on with Grin

I shall let you know how I get on. Thank you all for your input.

I have one on my neck. I've had it for years. It got inflamed once and I had to have it lanced and a load of yuk came out. It healed up, but the lump is still visible and feels just like how you have described yours.
Dr told me it was a sebaceous cyst. He told me I could have it surgically removed, but I haven't done anything about it. It's not sore and doesn't bother me.

beeefcake · 31/08/2018 13:53

I had this a few years ago and it was my occipital lymph node, I think it was because I had pierced my ears but can't really remember. In any case they will sometimes swell up and struggle to go down and it's no cause for concern. Look them up online and see if the location matches.

DrawingPlans · 31/08/2018 16:10

Yes Beeefcake that's exactly where it is!

I just Googled it and it's not much to worry about unless it's hard and doesn't move. Oops, mine are both of those.

Oh well, I haven't got long before the doctors. It'll all be sorted Monday morning.

Don't worry mine was too!!!! Literally hard as a rock and huge. I'm sure it will go down on it's own but you are doing the right thing getting it checked.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/08/2018 17:10

I had one too. For many years. Size of a marble.

One day it went krakatoa - very messy but that was the end of that!

toomuchhappyland · 31/08/2018 21:19

One of mine swells up like a marble if I get a big pimple or insect bite on my neck. It stays up for a week or so then goes down again. I’ve got a couple of smaller ones that are always “up” but the gp said they’re fine. You’re doing the right thing getting it checked but I’m sure it’ll be OK.

Just been to see the lovliest GP. She was so nice.

She doesn't think it is much to worry about but is sending me for bloods and if it's still the same in 2 weeks then she will get a scan sorted.

She said it didn't feel like it was anything serious and I only have 1 enlarged node and it is under 2cm dia. But she did say, she didn't like the shape of it (it has flattened apparently) and because I have had it for a while and because it doesn't hurt they need to investigate further.

So that's it for now. Will wait to see what the next 2 week's bring.
